avast is blocking xmlka url malware

OK methinks we will just hang on for a few hours just in case

Computer ran all night and still no alerts. I think you got it.

Sheesh that was a trail and a half. Still I now know where to go for the latest iteration of this

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Remove Combofix

Click Start then Run.
On Windows7 or Vista you may use Start Search field if Run is not available.
In the box copy/paste the following command:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Note that there is a space between " ComboFix " and " /Uninstall " .

Then click OK (or press Enter ).
Wait for the uninstall process to complete.

Remove tools

Download and run Delfix

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article

I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

If you do need to keep Java then download JavaRa
Run the programme and select Remove Java Runtime. Uninstall all versions of Java present
Once done then run it again and select Update Java runtime > Download and install Latest version

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

CryptoPrevent install this programme to lock down and prevent crypto ransome ware

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/CryptoPrevent.JPG

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Unchecky

Click on the link above to be taken to Unchecky.com
click the very large Download button.
click Save
Click Open folder
Right click on the Unchecky_setup and choose to Run as Administrator
Once open click the Install button.
Then click on Finish
Unchecky is now installed and will help you keep unwanted check boxes unchecked, this is a fire and forget programme

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

All of the above done. Thanks a lot for all your help! I have one more question for you (I hope). I used a flash drive to back up some files while this was all going on in case I had to wipe the hard drive to remove the virus. Do you think the flash drive is okay to use. What are your recommendations there?

Do you have a USB drive ? I have scavenged a hard drive from one of my old computers and put it in a caddy (about £10) and I now have a 200Gb usb drive, I now use that to run Macrium reflect to create a disc image. Then when I mess up, as is my wont when I play with new tools, I can be back up and running in about 15 minutes. I have made a little guide on how to use Macrium Reflect if you decide to go that route

I don’t have a USB drive. I’ll definitely look into getting one. If you have a link to the guide, I’d like to bookmark it. I’d hate to go through all this again. Let me rephrase my original question again. Is there any risk of reinfection with using my flash drive I used to back up the files?

Still no alerts by the way!

Hi mikefred,

Best to wait for essexboy to answer whether or not you can use your flash drive w/o risk of re-infection. He’s about six hours ahead of me, and usually comes here after day job, so might be a bit before you hear from him but will be sometime today for sure.

You did a good job, btw. ;D

There should not be due to the nature of the adware… But, better safe than sorry. Leave this programme on your system permanently, it just sits in the background doing nothing until a USB flash drive is inserted

Download MCShield to your desktop and install
It will initially run a scan and show the result as a toaster by the system clock
Then in the control centre select scanner and tick unhide items on flash drives

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/mcshield%20unhide.JPG

Plug in the drive and McShield will start a scan

Then get the log which will be located under the logs tab on the main page

And post that
