Avast is not running

The FIX button does not work, cannot update (error message: Failed to update. The Avast service is not running)

Cannot SCAN, (error message: Unable to start scan. There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper).

Any help greatfully received.

I have been using Avast for a couple of years now, with no prior problems. Used Symantec before that.

Avast Pro, version 7.0.1473. Windows XP.

The problem showed up yesterday

Repair avast!:

  1. Control Panel → Add/Remove programs → avast!
  2. Click on ‘Repair’.
  3. Follow instructions.
  4. Reboot.

Followed your instructions, it is working now.

Froze the system completely at first, a couple more reboots, seems fine at the moment.
