Avast is not working :(

Hey guys,
So first of all, I’ve been having issues with IE for a little while and was just assuming it was my isp. It keeps coming up telling me that IE cannot display the web page. Well now I believe it’s a virus. I don’t have the same problem with my other computers and IE just acts funky in other ways on this one as well.

I’m running Vista Ultimate and had the previous version of avast at first. Surprised it never asked me to update to the newer version. Anyway, I uninstalled avast and reinstalled the newest version, did a full system scan and got 3 groups of results.

  1. rootkit high level threat… This appears to be the Adobe Air installer which I installed after your new software updater told me to.

  2. the infamous “Archive password protected”

  3. the system cannot find the path specefied

BUT, it won’t let me do anything. When I click apply nothing happens and it won’t let me click on any individual one to pick what to do with it. The adobe air one says “error, the request is not supported”

Now I’ve clicked show the desktop a couple times so I could ask you about it and now the list is gone! Do I have to do another 3 hour scan to get it back? This is so frustrating. Here’s what I had before it disappeared.

3. the system cannot find the path specefied
a scan error message.....if you reboot and scan again this is usually gone
2. the infamous "Archive password protected"
another scan error message, avast tell you it could not scan the file(s) and the reason why. it does not mean they are infected
1. rootkit high level threat... This appears to be the Adobe Air installer which I installed after your new software updater told me to.
this i guess is a FP

if you want a check…folow this guide and attach the requsted logs http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

Is it just IE with the problem ?

As far as I can tell? But that’s really about all she uses.

Okay well here you go then  what do you think?

OK first we will update to IE9 http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=16792

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Okay I’ve taken the recommended steps…

I had to reboot after installing IE9 and OTL did some sort of scan, hence the OTL boot log I posted. Wasn’t watching that one.

Then I did the quick scan and combofix… Do you see anything left?

I’ll let you know in a day or so how it’s running… Thank you!

Is IE functioning now ?

It seems to be fine now

Now if I only new how I got these virus’s to avoid them in the future I’d be doing good. I use Avast supplemented with MBAM. You would think one of them would have caught them.

But you should hide yor mail-address → http://forum.avast.com/index.php?msg=680473 (against spam-mails).

Thank you! I wiil indeed do just that! But what makes you think I understand German? I know it’s somewhere in my profile, I’m sure I can figure it out.

I think I got it! Is it visible now?

Nope mail address no longer visible

The stuff you had comes bundled with free programmes. So when you install them from now on use the custom install option and do not allow any toolbars etc…

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

]A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

Clear Restore Points

Go Start > All Programmes > Accessories > System tools
Right click Disc Cleanup and select run as administrator
When it pops up at the first prompt select OK after it has done some calculations the tabs will appear
