Evening all, and an Early Merry Christmas! I have an odd problem with my avast home edition, free download. I recently had to do a bit of an overhaul of the computer, including reinstalling Avast home edition. However, everytime my computer now boots up, avast tells me it needs to restart the computer. It has done it 5 times on the run now. This is obviously really frustrating, does anyone have any idea why and how i can get it to stop? Thanks!
First I assume since you are using the avast 4 Home version you have posted on the wrong forum (avast 4 server edition), hopefully one of the moderators will move it.
Operating system restart needed by avast message - First check the contents of the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log file, which should show you why it thinks the reboot is needed.
This may be solved, in some systems, by deleting the file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\reboot.txt
If that doesn’t resolve it check this:
You can also check this registry entry (right after computer restart):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager, if it contains “PendingFileRenameOpertaions”.
Check its contents and if there’s only “reboot.txt” from avast4\setup folder, delete PendingFileRenameOperations, don’t delete any other key.
Back-up (export) the registry key before you edit/delete, just in case.
Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
regarding posting the last 200+ lines of the setup log, please find as follows:

Hope it helps solve the issue, as it appears to be causing my hard drive to work overtime also.
Strange… there isn’t a reboot required… and nothing is being done (updated)… your log seems clean…
I can’t explain it then, but everytime i boot up the laptop it is constantly asking to reboot my machine, its getting very tiresome. But, the copy i have on my desktop computer is fine, no problems with it at all. Just this one on my laptop
Did you try David’s advices on reply #1 above?
i did, and sadly, its still happening. I am not a computer genius, i know enough to handle most things, but i am not a programmer of anything. I can’t figure this for the life of me
I am also having the same problm with my computer where it continues to want to reboot my computer. I was working fine until the updated version 4.0 was downloaded to my computer this morning. Now, ever since then, every time I boot up my computer avast wants to do a system reboot.
Did you both, Kyre and bweb25 tried to solve this by deleting the file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\reboot.txt ?
i did and it didn’t work. In fact, i have just been asked to reset the computer now.
I would suggest you try a clean reinstall.
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.
Now uninstall, reboot, run the uninstall utility, reboot install the latest version, reboot.
Hmmm, I’m quite confident that there is a bug - probably into any latest vps updates - due to this behavior.
There a lot of related posts about restarting opened in forums :
For instance: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=32252
This post is not in the correct Topic
Uninstalled both Trojan Hunter and Avast… Cleaned registry with Tune Up Utilities 2008… Deleted both remaining folders… Rebooted… Installed Trojan Hunter under Administrator, updated it, ran a scan, no problems… rebooted… Installed Avast under Administrator, updated it, ran a scan, found WIN32.delf-HHG (2) in recycle bin, $RG32EN5.TMP & $RVJ37PB.EXE (1) in Mozilla\Profiles\default\username.slt\Cache, not sure why it showed up there, (1) in Administrator\Downloads, TrojanHunterSetup.exe … They both seem to be getting along with each other… Thanks for all your help…
Although off topic:
I have discovered the issue, at least for me, and it is not an Avast problem at all. I tracked the reboot message to Adobe Acrobat Updater and resolved the issue by turning of the updater using msconfig>startup. If you are uncomfortable with using msconfig, uninstalling and re-installing Adobe worked as well.
Moderators please post this to any additional threads I miss.
Again off topic but wish to clarify:
I should have been more specific in my reply. My reboot message was generic, ie. it did not specify which program was advising the necessity for a reboot. My apologies to those I sent in the wrong direction.
