I get this error message when I try to run it from the Start menu.
The applicaton has failed to start because it`s side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more details.
It appears that Avast is no longer running how do I fix this?
You didn’t say what kind of Windows OS you have however here is a link at vista64.com that explains what the problem is; i.e. corrupted Windows files, and how to fix it.

The same solution probably applies for W7 x64. I wouldn’t venture to guess if it applies to XP, Vista x32 or W7 x32.

I have seen this many times. My experience is that every instance of this problem occurred after installing from Ninite.
This error in relation to avast - Side-By-Side Configuration is Incorrect - You need to install MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable.
You need 2008 SP1 - this is the one:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update
Note this link there are 64bit versions there (IA64, x64) ensure you get the correct one for your OS (x86 32bit OS, x64 64bit OS)
