Avast Isn't Showing Perfect or Results of Scanning Items

I own the Avast Free Anti-Virus,

Program version: 2014.9.0.2011

Virus definitions version: 140202-1

Number of definitions: 2.499.799

I am running it on a HP Pavilion dv7-7020US, Windows 7 Home Preimum, Service Pack 1, Intel Core i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz

RAM 8.00
64-bit Operating System

What is happening is that when I do a quick virus scan, full virus scan, or a single virus scan on 1 folder, file, the window with the results doesn’t show the results, it just shows 2 sets of line 6 on each side. No % or numbers or anything. Is this how the current version I own, suppose to work? Or do I have a bad copy?

Here is a screen shot of a result of a Zipped folder.

Ordinarily I would suggest that you do an avast Repair.

However, the latest avast version is 9.0.2013 http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=145192.0, so I would suggest installing the latest version.

Yes I reinstalled the program to the latest version you listed, BUT when I do a scan it still does not show the percentage or results it’s still BLANK.

In the various scans Quick/Full/Folder that you are using are you saving a report file as that is presumably where they get/retain details of the scan.

avastUI > Scan - select the scan e.g. Quick - now select the Settings > Report file - ensure that you have Generate report file enabled.

This what I am seeing on my end.

That is weird as you appear to have two elements selected in the Left column, Scan and Help, don’t know if that is causing this.

Try a repair of avast:
win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Uninstall/Change and select Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair.

Nope I did that and still see the program as the same way.

This is very strange, GUI anomalies are normally resolved with a Repair and failing that a reinstall. But you say you did that.

Was the reinstall done as a clean reinstall utilizing the avast uninstall utility (see below for clean install steps) ?

  • Download the latest version of avast, 9.0.2013 http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, avastclear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD.

    1. Now uninstall avast! - using add remove programs, if you can’t do that (as appears to be the case) start from the next step, reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, it will request it be run from safe mode (and will handle the boot into safe mode), once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
Note: save the copy of avastclear.exe so it can be reused as some users are reporting that after running it, it is self-deleting.

I did all of that and it still does the same thing.

Sorry this hasn’t worked out so far, I’m running out of ideas.

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
What other security based applications do you have installed (anti-spyware, etc.) ?
Do you use any windows display software, like windows Blinds or Fences, that modify the themes and windows display ?

Hopefully someone else can pick this up.

None since I got this new laptop I’ve used Avast. Other programs I use are

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Smart Defrag 3

CCleaner

And Avast FREE Anti-Virus

Nothing there I can see might have that effect. (EDIT typo)

That said ccleaner does have options, which may be checked by default that attempt to clear avast temp files. I would ensure those options for avast are unchecked, though I doubt it would be a resolution to this issue.

This might sound a little extreme but have you tried a system restore?
Use this option with great caution. Especially if it is done from safe mode.

I don’t think a system restore will fix this problem. Are there any other FREE anti-virus programs that are worth using?

Looks like it may be an HTML problem, do any other programmes exhibit similar behaviour

The only reason I mentioned a system restore is to allow you to make a fresh “clean” install.
Like I said it may sound extreme but if it works…

No all other programs are running fine.

napy666,

I had the exact same problem with the blank scan pop-up window. I did two things that seemed to fix the issue:

  1. I restored factory defaults:
    a. First back up your settings just in case you need them: Open avast program window - Settings - General in the new window - scroll to the bottom and click “Back up settings”
    b. Then stay in the same window and click on Troubleshooting - click on “Reset now”.

  2. Then Repair avast as already described here:
Open your “Programs and Features” from the Control Panel - right-click on avast and Uninstall/Change then Repair.

Doing these two actions seems to fix my problem and now it displays the scan results.
I hope this helps.

All the best,
Norbert

That DID NOT work!
