This is the second time this has happened so far. I have had to uninstall and reinstall it each time to get it to work again. How can I fix this??? I want to stay wit Avast Home its the only anti virus software I feel safe with.
Oh and it freezes when I try to close it. I have to right click and exit it from the bottom bar.
Isn’t there two avast.setup processes running at the same time (you can click CTRL+ALT+DEL and kill both processes, then start an update again)?
No there is just one. Should I kill that then try to update?
I killed it then opened Avast up again and did the manual update it worked. 
Will the automatic update work now?? ???
The one you killed had probably hung for some reason, this was detected when you tried to run a second occurrence of it. I would say that you will have to monitor it to see if it does work, but it is likely it will.
You can check the avast! VPS Updates History page to see if there have been any updates and if they have been done automatically.
How come this hanging thing happens?
I really haven’t the first idea, I have never experienced it, there are too many permutations and unless that is accompanied by an error message, etc. very difficult to identify.
There could be some information in the setup.log files in the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log or C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup folder, look at the bottom of the log files if it happens again and paste the last 50 lines or so here.

You open the files, navigate in windows explorer to the paths of which I gave above using a text editor like notepad. These files are constantly updated so as I said previously if the problem occurs again, then check the files. The lines at the bottom are the latest entries, you should be able to see that from the date on the first line of each group and the time at the start of each line.
Auto update is up running just got one.

No prob. I don’t feel safe on a computer unless I’m using Avast.
