Avast! IS's Internet Connection Sharing Mode.

I like the program, but cannot get the ICS to work. The machine I’m using as my Gateway is using XP 32-bit SP3. As long as I disable Avast! Shields Control then ICS is working correctly. It’s 'Net browsing from other computers that has a problem, file sharing seems to work fine, even no matter the Workgroup name. I also disabled and re-enabled ICS with the Firewall active but still doesn’t work. There aren’t enough advanced options, at least that I’m aware of, to make the needed changes.

Please fix the Internet Connection Sharing Mode. Thanks. I loved Avast! 4.8, and I’m sure you guys will do awesome with this software but it’s a bit premature to release it with the bugs it has. I look forward to the next releases but for now…going back to Anti-Virus only and relying on my Hardware Firewall.

Thank you for reading this.

SirRush,

I have been testing internet sharing mode in avast IS recently and unfortunately I must confirm there are still some problems. We will definitely look into this issue soon. Sorry for the troubles for now.

Lukas.

Dear Lukor,

Thanks for the reply. I’ll check back once in a while.

I’m not sure at all this will help but I remember there were big issues with ICS when Comodo firewall 3.0 got released a few years ago, and a user needing it complained again and again… problem is that most people don’t need the feature so it wasn’t a priority. They finally sorted it by turning it on by default, which probably means that it’s on as soon as the network is detected for the first time. Can’t remember if they modified anything else, anyway it obviously couldn’t apply to Avast IS. That’s not much but that’s all I can say

edit: on the other hand, this could be interpreted as a potential security flaw by those who don’t need it, especially if they forget to turn it off.

Normally I don’t like to use it, but I have a few computers with one as the Gateway. I know ICS isn’t the most secure thing (what really is by M$…? Haha) but I’m also behind a hardware Firewall that I trust, but I do like that add bit of protection.

I’m looking around for some other programs that’ll do what ICS does (PcAnywhere, but no Net sharing) but nothing I’m Happy with…

Yes, that could be seen as a security flaw. ZoneAlarm handles ICS nicely, but their software has so many problems and slows every machine down so much every time I try it, it’s just not worth it. Much like using Symantec and McAfee programs as well, yuck. AVG 7 handled it nicely (though not greatly secure), but AVG 8 and Kaspersky are more along the lines of needing a Degree (not really…) to be able to use them. Most software out there doesn’t seem to have the Basic User in mind. Avast! has done a good job with that so far, and are making sweet advances which is why I’m sticking so far and hoping for it to work.

Man, I miss Sygate!

Thanks a lot for your reply. Its appreciated.
