Avast issues on XP user accounts

I upgraded to Avast 5 the other night. Got a few issues with it, but that is for another post. The issue I’m most concerned with is that the program does not appear to be running on any other user account on my XP system. V4.8 ran just fine for all users, but once I upgraded, the Avast icon disappeared from the task bar, desktop, and Programs list on all other user names.

The day after the upgrade, I noticed my husband getting pop-ups like crazy as he browsed the internet. I thought maybe he needed to individually configure the settings, but then could not even find the program. I tried to look it up in “My Computer”, but XP is also denying access to the c:Programs folder on all user accounts but the one I was on during the upgrade (we all have administrator access.)

I tried to uninstall, but then was left with a barely functional mutant version 4.8 and still no access to the programs folder on other user accounts.

I reinstalled 5 and it works okay on my user account only. Still no sign of the program on any other user account. I ordered my family to stay on my user account until this is resolved, but that is not an acceptable permanent solution.

So, is it there, but running in some super stealth mode for all other users? Or, is it a bad install maybe? And, no matter what I ultimately decide to do with Avast 4, how do I get access back to the Programs folders on other user accounts?

–thanks, mimib

I think you need to do a new clean install using the removal tool and clean out avast 5 and avast 4.8 reboot and then install avast 5 again

Uninstall Utility http://www.avast.com/en-eu/uninstall-utility

Agree with Pondus.
Follow the directions on the page hosting the uninstall utility.

It’s best to have dowloaded the tool, and a fresh copy of the full installation file (find that here ) so you can do the removal and reinstall while disconnected from the internet.

I run a machine with only one user account, but I seem to recall that in the past when installing on a machine with more than one account, one of the options during the install routine was “install for all users/this user only” (or words to that effect)? Not at all sure on this, but if that is an option, I’d use it.

Let us know if this solves the problem, particularly in regard to the inaccessible files/folder on the other accounts.
