What the fuck?!! I have Avast set NOT to auto-update, but today I turned on my computer and there’s Avast telling me I need to reboot. So I do, and Avast fails to run. I try to run it manually and I get “Error executing program! (5)” which is the error typically given when a piece of software has been compiled exclusively for a newer version of Windows.
Yes, I have an older system and it still has Windows XP. I don’t want to hear about what a horrible thing this is. If I want to use XP, I’ll use XP. If Avast no longer wants to support Xp, that’s their right.
But why in the frigging hell would Avast force an update to a version that isn’t going to work on this operating system? Is it really too much to ask that the program check to see if the new version is compatible before forcing my system to install it AGAINST MY WISHES???
Now I have to uninstall this crap, go find an older version that still works under XP, install that and hope that the programmers haven’t been dicks enough to bar older versions from download the latest virus definitions.
Thanks Avast! With every new version, your program becomes ever more hostile to the end user. If you’re trying to piss people off and drive away customers, you’re doing one hell of a job!
To 1: I confirm (see my signature).
To 2: If your CPU doesn’t support SSE2, the last running version for ‘non-SSE2’ machines is
2015.10.4.2233!

A repair didn’t work, but uninstalling the old version and installing the newest one seems to have worked.
Of course I had to add about a dozen new rules to my firewall because the alerts kept popping up as fast as I could click the Always Permit button.
Then once it was installed, I had to reboot into safe mode so that I could delete the EXE for the stupid “emergency” updater. Despite the stated purpose of this being for “emergency” situations, this runs every single day, like clockwork. Are you trying to tell me that there’s an emergency situation every single day? And you can’t just make a firewall rule and permit or deny it because every time it pops up, the filename of the EXE is always something like;
JDGklghtgl3hd6t972tglisdgvhxbjfvl.exe
I got so sick of this popping up all the time that I now immediately go in and delete the main emergency updater file.
No, there isn’t a “emergency” every day.
But needed is to check if there is a “emergency” update to avast (the application) or the VPS (which sometimes also contains a application update).
If you have a decent firewall, you sure can set a rule for the avast files even if they are using “random” names.
I use the free version of Kerio Personal Firewall. I’ve tried to set a rule for the Avast emergency updater, but apparently the rules are based on the EXE name, so every time the name changes it’s an unrecognized program.
And why exactly does it need to have a random name every time it runs? I have more rules and exceptions in my firewall for Avast than for any other piece of software on my system. Rules for the main program, for the service, for the installer, etc.
