System:
intel P4 1.5
512Mb PC800
win2K professional (latest service packs & updates)
all drivers are the latest
Avast! Home installed
Zonealarm(free) is installed too
(I’m a techsupport guy[a really good one :-*], so this really is last resort)
Everytime I start my rigg, I get a message: " a newer version is available" (I downloaded it yesterday, so I don’t think it’s true).
After only a few seconds I get the message “Alvast needs to reboot your operating system”
Once rebooted, the same thing happens again…
you did do the initial avast installation as Administrator ?
what version numbers and dates do you have for program and iavs ? (blue systray icon → about …)
does a repair of avast via software → uninstall help ?
anything unusual/helpful in the event logs or avast’s install/setup/Update-Log ?
I’m not at home right now so I can’t give you most of what you asked for.
I did check avast’s logs, and they were all empty(?).
I haven’t tryed reinstalling yet. At first I thought it was some kind of incremental update, but after 10 reboots, you ask yourself how incremental it can get.
I’ll let you know in a couple of hours (+4.5 hours to be exact) how reinstalling went.
Thanks
edit: I think my standard profile is a superuser(for security reasons). I’ll do it with my administrator account.
Normally when I am away on vacation I do not get on the board, but since you are a fellow “tech” person, I made an exception.
Your problem is most likely in Windows. There are 3 files that Avast modifies when updating. In the past, Windows seems to mark these files as read only which prevents Avast from changing them. Therefore it continues in its’ attempt to update them.
The files are all listed in the avast “log setup file” not the Log Viewer.
The 3 files in question seem to definetly be the source of the problem:
msvc170
msvcp70
msvcr70
Once you locate the file names, go into the file properties for each and uncheck “read only”. Reboot…and Avast should update correctly on the next attempt.
If you want more history on this problem, then do a forum search for “msvc” and set it to ALL WORDS.
The files you mensionned aren’t read-only. They’re marked as archives.
I checked to see if I was an administrator, my account was fine. I tryed several things listed in the search result(re-install/using attrib/checking dllcache folder), no can do. It seems a lot of people have had this issue.
I read that there was a possible solution to the problem(a very dark road filled with perils), wich can be found by searching for “msvc” in the forums, like you said.
Still, I’m not wasting any more time on this issue.
I’d like to thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction, tho.
