Avast keeps on crashing and creates too many localhost network connections

I had been a great advocate of Avast for last 4+ years but now this product looks to be going down the drain since last few updates.

  1. It keeps on going into the inactive mode and its service regularly stops by itself.

  2. It is creating too many network connections to itself. I start the system and with no browser running, no apps running, all network connections disabled and only critical windows services running, Avast creates upwards of 100 network connections and keeps on creating more. I don’t understand what it is trying to do and why can’t it work with its various components on existing connections instead of putting extra load on the machine by creating more?

Windows 7 SP1
Avast Program version: 12.3.2280(build 12.3.3154.6)

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
  • Other security related software installed…?

Free version of Avast and only other thing running is Windows firewall. I don’t know whether Avast usually makes that many network connections or something went wrong in any of that last program update. Will try to do a fresh install, maybe that may solve the crashing problem as well.

OK, report back.

Hi,

I don’t know if its related but in the last 2 weeks my internet was becoming unstable and sometimes - 10 Mbps (less) download speed.
Yesterday i uninstalled avast to see if it would solve the problem, and yes with another av my internet is more stable, no more drops in internet speed.
