Avast keeps Outlook from syncing with Gmail

I upgraded from the free version today and immediately ran into a problem. My two Gmail accounts will not connect to Gmail through Outlook 2016 though they did that just fine early this morning. There are two error messages. One is about the encryption and one is about connecting to the server. When I turned off the Avast spam filter, all was well again. This makes me unhappy as one of the reasons I chose Avast was the hope of reducing spam email. Is there a fix? I could not find a recent report in the forum on this issue.

Spamfilters does not reduce spam mails, as the name say they filter spam / send them to the spam folder

Gmail has one of the best spamfilters there is. Does not Gmail spamfilter block them?
