Well my Avast has shut it’s self off twice in the last couple of days, which is better than the every couple of hours it was doing before, (It did stop a Trojan virus earlier tonight so glad it’s staying on longer) I looked for the dumps/logs but still cant find them. I looked under windows explorer and no files. Im on vista for laptops so if anyone can walk me through the process step by step that would be great but some of the folders yall are telling me to look in I dont have (Like documents and settings). I will have to remove the newly downloaded Avast with the removal tool but I am really nervous about it since I dont know what I am doing and I cant even find logs and dump folders. I could really use step by step directions from someone using the same operating system. Any help or advice before I do this removal/cleaning tool would be appreciated.
I suggest an installation from scratch:
- Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
- Download the latest avast! version and save it.
- Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
- Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
- Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
- Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
- Check and post the results.
Okay, I’m having this same trouble, and it’s after getting rid of a nasty little piece of malware called AV Security Suite. I think I got rid of it, but ever since then, which was this morning, Avast has been being shut off in the midst of my computer usage. If you have any ideas as to how to fix this, please let me know.
Did you perform an installation from scratch as posted before?
I sure did. And it’s still getting shut down for some reason.
Hi jimflint1
re: ‘nasty little piece of malware’
if you go to this page and follow directions
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0
run FIRST step - Malwarebytes
THEN when you run the second step - OTL - we will get some idea of what is happening in yr system
and if need be essexboy will be able to direct you how to tackle any nasty infection that may have beset yr system
Try running Malwarebyte : http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
and Hitman pro : http://www.surfright.nl/en
you may be infected ![]()
I am using Avast free 5 on my XPSp2 machine for last couple of months. Since last 15 days Avast started turning itself off. I have multiple HDDS with multiple OS. So tested entire PC with AVG Free. Avira & could not detect any virus. Then reformatted partition & installed XPSP2 fresh and installed Avast even before installing motherboard drivers. Again Avast starte turning off. Checked system with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware, Hitman, IOBit Security 360 & OTL. All the 3said system is free. Can you please help
( Tried to attach unp200273941.tmp.mdmp file. Forum is not accepting the file)
You might also want to check the system with spybot search and destroy ( http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html )
and superantispyware ( http://www.superantispyware.com/ ), the portable version is great.
@ ajjeru,
You do not send the mini-dump file to the forum. Please read here and where to send it:
Here is additional information on how to invoke a memory dump file: http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=71.
Remember to re-name it uniquely. Thank you.
Got the problem just now. Memory dump file size is 1 GB. It is not possible for me to upload that file due to my limited bandwidth. (256kbps). Any other solution?
Thanks
Please help
Please help, the latest version of free Avast antivirus keeps stopping with errors. After restarting Avast, all works fine, until the next error.
I have tried repairing my install, and I use no other conflicting software. It is extra annpyoing, because it is hard to tell when avast stops working, and it just seems to happen randomly.
I find error logs and .dpm files in my Avast system directories. For instance the error log reads:

I will uninstall Avast and try Antivir
@ ajjeru,
Your post got lost in this very old thread. Your last question was asking to send the dump file to the forum, which I instructed you on 10/06/10 was incorrect and gave you the information where to send it. I will give it to you again:
- ZIP the file \windows\memory.dmp (try to name it uniquely) and upload it to the following ftp site: ftp.avast.com/incoming (note you don’t have read access to the site, only write).
Any other posters wishing to post regarding a similar issue needs to open a new thread. Thank you.
A post was split to a new topic: Avast keeps turning it’s self off
