Avast killed XP .... HELP !!!

I installed avast on my pc, and now it hangs…

After Install, It promted me to re-start and set up… after it scanned and put files in the chest it went to the user log in page and that’s when things went south…

I get to the users page, log in, my profile appears to load, but with no icons or taskbar / start menu. ALT/CTL-DEL was a blank screen (using next to no resources … lol )

I started in safe mode, and admin, and any other mode that was available (& made sense) from the F-8 promt, it would be nice to get our machine back working today

can anyone help… please

I have read similar posts but all seem to be solved by safe mode, any input will be greatly appreciated… thank you

Hi Dtrmn8r,

Firstly, don’t panic!

Which files did it put in the chest? Was it a boot-time scan? See if you can provide as much detail as you can. Then the experts on this forum will be able to help you.

It may be that Avast deleted or quarantined a system-relevant file. This may be preventing Window$ from loading correctly.

It would also be helpful if you can list other programs you were using. For example, which Firewall.

Remember - don’t panic! I’m sure one of the experts on this forum will be able to help you soon.

Good luck!

Sounds about right with the boot scan but I didn’t write down every ( or any ) file that was chested… is that an “oops”… there were lots of them

From safe mode you can look in the log:

I think there should also be a boot scan log here:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\report\aswBoot.txt

Or check the source file using notepad C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Warning.log and copy and paste the entry.

still no luck with the log… I ran appwiz.cpl from the task manager in safe mode and tried uninstall but the result is the same, no start/taskbar, & no icons…

any other suggestions, … pleeeeeaaasse !

thanx

If you can get into safe mode and access MSconfig then check if the windows services have been disabled by something. It might have been a virus but we don’t know for sure yet. Excuse of confusion but you did state that you managed to get into safe mode right? check the infected files and tell us what they were.
