Avast KILLS my internet!!  WHY?? & How to rehabilitate it?? I use Vista... (Yuk)

Last chance for Avast! I kept getting an error code Ieframe DNS Error… Explorer cannot open the webpage. Firefox wouldn’t even open, and Opera worked for a little while, then suddenly stopped, and had to close.
I had no idea what was causing this, so I did a FULL FACTORY RESTORE! (Yea, lost plenty.) Including our beloved Avast. But low and behold, my Internet started working!!! Right up until I downloaded Avast, then, again, my Internet Died!

Unless I get a quick, easy, explaination, and way to fix the problem, I’m afraid I’ll have to uninstall her, and simply share my misfortune with your product, with about a thousand of my friends!

I’m told, when Avast works right, it’s the best… SO, Can anyone help???

Have you checked your firewall whatever one you use? Is avast allowed through this firewall? Avast does not block access to the internet. BUT, if avast is not allowed through the firewall, then your access which goes through avast (or most any other anti-virus program) will be blocked. But, it is not avast doing the blocking … it’s the firewall blocking access.

Following on from CharleyO, the most common cause is firewall blocking the Web Shield file ashWebSv.exe, if that can’t connect then effectively you can’t browse, except for https (SSL, secure encrypted) pages which the web shield can’t and doesn’t scan.

You could have paused or terminated the Web Shield provider to see if that allowed you to browse, it would tend to confirm firewall blocking.

I’m sorry you chose the nuclear option of a factory restore before seeking help on the forums as we may have been able to help you avoid that. I can only assume that since you couldn’t connect to the internet you couldn’t do that, which begs the question how are you connecting now ?

I’m not entirely sure if the above error is related, but I guess if DNS requests are also routed through the web shield proxy then you would get an error or blank page, etc. though I’m not sure if it would be Ieframe DNS Error, but lots of hits on google http://www.google.com/search?q=Ieframe+DNS+Error

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashWebSv.exe internet access ?

If it does delete the entries for them and do a manual update and reconnect to the internet, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

You don’t have to threaten to uninstall and tell your friends to receive a prompt response on these forums.

I’m a new Avast user and have the same problem, it kills my internet connection. If I disable Avast I can connect. I disabled my firewall to see if the problem would resolve and it did not…so even though I have no firewall enabled Avast kills the connection. Any suggestions? This computer is networked via a router, I use Firefox, Windows XP, and the Windows firewall.

No, I have not installed IE7. I removed McAfee (based on another posted remedy) and updated Avast-- the problem went away! I’m online with Avast activated and my fire wall up. Take note distressed newbe. I did not remove the McAfee site adviser because I really like this feature it’s like surfing in a wet suit-- safe surfing…It did not cause any problems.

Hello. I registered here for future use and to comment on that stupid starter post. “Distressed Newbie” that is a pathetic way to gain attention and I really doubt you have thousands of friends when you use that kind of way to approach people (especially considering very very very very few has so many people one can call friends).

Back on topic; most of the posts similar to yours is caused by having a firewall that treats Avast! applications as unsafe.
When Avast! tries to access the internet or interfer your firewall might treat it as an attack and may (depending on your settings) disable internet connection for i.e. 2 minutes, more or less.
