Avast localization into Gaelic

Hi,
Is there a localization project for Avast that one can join? A friend was showing me the Catalan version and since we’ve been working hard to localize a full ‘set’ of office applications and tools into our language, Scottish Gaelic, I was wondering if this could be ‘our’ antivirus. There seem to be quite a lot of languages in the UI so I’m hopeful

But even though I’m good at searching for stuff on the web, I haven’t been able to find anything. Anyone know what the process is or who I should talk to?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.
This should help you:

Thanks!

Does anyone know if there are any admins watching that thread? It’s been over two weeks and I’ve not heard anything from anyone over there.

I’ve reported your post in the other thread to a Moderator. The rest is up to Avast.

Well, generally it’s not a problem to add a new language, but regarding Gaelic, I am not 100% sure.
Every localization of avast! program is done via a translation tool (Passolo) and it doesn’t “know” such language (even older versions of Windows SDK don’t know the language code). I guess I can define a custom, unnamed language code in the project - but I am not completely sure if other problems won’t appear later. Hopefully not, but…

I should also warn you that it’s a lot of work to translate avast! UI - almost 30 000 words in English.

Are we talking SDL Passolo? I’ve not worked with Passolo itself but its sister product Trados Studio (which I use quite a lot) certainly knows gd as a locale. These programs aren’t always consistent about what they list Gaelic under, sometimes it’s Gaelic (Scotland), sometimes Scottish Gaelic and sometimes they just make me scream  Anyway, I’d be surprised if it did not recognize Gaelic.

The volume isn’t an issue as long as there are no deadlines as such. Somewhat astonished though at 30k, even LibreOffice only weighs in at 95k and that’s a full office suite. Do those 30k include Help files?

I don’t think so… In 10 years translating avast!, now it’s easy because the translation is only incremental, but at the beginning it was such a long journey
Welcome aboard

Grand. So what’s the next step?

PS I may be offline for a fortnight or so, so if I don’t answer before mid-May that doesn’t mean I’ve lost interest!

Yes, we are talking about SDL Passolo. Actually we still use version 2009, but even the build 2011 I tried doesn’t have Gaelic listed.
No, those 30k words certainly doesn’t include helps. Helps are not translated into many languages.

Next step… well, I can prepare the translation package and send it to you, together with some more info.

Odd, I’ll fire an email at SDL.

Glad to hear about the help files - we tend not to do those anyway (like those in LibreOffice), just too much overhead and not many people use the Help anyway as it rarely helps but hit the web instead!

So yes, please go ahead and send me the files (perhaps after the 15 May just in case they’re huge and clog up my email while away).

Back. Also had an email from SDL, Passolo DOES support Gaelic, they even sent a screenshot:

Well, I simply don’t have it there in my version.
Maybe it’s been added in the latest builds, but I’m afraid I am not gonna upgrade now.

Ah the forum is back ;D

How can we move this forward?

Hi akerbeltz,

After Thursday Scottish Gaelic “could” be much more than a wee item after 360 years

Damian

Well, whatever the outcome of the vote, I’d like to work on this one ;D
