Avast Lockup/Freeze

Hardware; AMD64 x2 4400, Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe, 2gb DDR400, 7800GTX
Software; Windows XP SP2, Avast 4.7.844, Firefox 1.5.0.4.
Other; Machine is 12 months old. Machine was wiped and reinstalled yesterday as of bi-monthly event.
Avast Providers; Network, Messaging, P2P, Standard

Steps to Reproduce,

o Visit http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm
o Download eicar.com
o Avast correctly informs of virus
o Click (Show Info)

Expected Result: Extra information concerning event.
Actual Result: Avast freezes, along with Firefox.

Steps taken to fix;
Attempts to close Firefox are useless, only by closing Avast does Firefox become responsive again, but by doing this Avast is no longer protecting the system. Only the Avast event window is unresponsive, the Avast system try icon works as usual, but closes along with the event window when it is force-closed via task manager.

Other info;
Follow the same steps to reproduce above but instead download the ZIP version. Open zip using WinRAR, and run the eicar.com file from within WinRAR, clicking Show Info will lockup WinRAR/Avast.

Strange… we tried with Firefox 1.5.0.4 and it works here.
In any case, there seems to be a problem with “starting the browser” on your system. I mean, when you click the link, avast! calls the browser (thorough Windows shell) and asks it to display the relevant page. In this case, the shell call got frozen somehow… but it’s not clear why (and, I don’t think we can do much about it, except for disabling the links in the virus dialog completely when called from Web Shield).
I really don’t know what might be the cause (that the behavior on your system is different from here)… some special shell extension installed, maybe even different Firefox configuration… ???

Stalka, if you do the same but starting Firefox in Safe Mode (through the link in the Start Menu > All Programs > Mozilla Firefox > … Safe Mode), will the problem disappear?
Maybe the problem is in one of the Firefox Extensions.
