On or about 5 September, access was blocked from Apple Mail to all 3 of my Hotmail POP3 accounts. My other 4 email accounts (non Hotmail) are OK. Disabling Mail Shield in Avast Mac Security 2015 allowed Apple Mail to again access the Hotmail POP3 server.
Can anyone shed some light onto this and possibly advise how to get around this issue?

What version of Avast do you have? What version of OS X do you have? Is there anything in the system log file (system.log)?

The MS SSL/TLS implementation used on the Hotmail servers is obviously incompatible
with OpenSSL 1.0.2 that was used in Avast 11.1. We have therefore switched back to
OpenSSL 1.0.1 in Avast version 11.2 that was released just a moment ago. An update
to this version should fix the issue.
I can confirm v11.2 fixed the problem.
