I have just intalled Thunderbird 3.1.5. I have Avast Free 5.0.677 running. I have a POP e-mail account which is not downloading e-mail, I get a blank (in the sense that Thunderbird does not seem to know what it is) error message when I check for new e-mails. The problem goes away when I turn off the Avast Mail Shield, as then I can download and receive e-mails just fine. Can someone help resolving this issue? All the best, Tiago
What is the domain for that email account and does it use SSL secure connection ?
What is the full text of the error message ?
Many thanks for the interest DavidR.
The domain is .ac.uk. The connection does not use SSL (connection security: None; authentication method: password, transmited insecurely, using port 110 by default).
What I meant with blank is that there is NO text in the Thunderbird error message! I presume a space or some such is being reported as the error message (I guess just an unrelated bug in Thunderbird?).
Does that help tiing it down?
Check the mail shield, expert settings, SSL Accounts. Now find the account there and either delete the pop3 entry or change the Encryption column to None.
Many thanks DavidR. I set the the ac.uk encription to none as suggested and it seems to be working fine. Please do feel apprecited today, it saved my day (and probably my week too).
No problem, glad I could help.
Welcome to the forums.
I am so glad I finally found this post. I have been searching for several hours trying to solve this inability to not only receive mail, but to send it as well. Following DavidR’s directions I found that there were NO entries under mail shield/expert settings/SSL Accounts. According to instructions in that window, if no encryption is used “no entries are necessary”. Apparently, however, this is NOT TRUE. Adding an entry for pop.charter.net - port=110 - encryption=none enabled me to receive emails via Thunderbird.
Had to add another entry for smtp on port 25 with no encryption to be able to send mail.
For what it’s worth, I am new to Avast as of last night. Been using AVG for at least 8 years. But AVG has become almost as bloated as Norton and McAfee adding between 7 and 9 processes running in the background. I hope Avast keeps to what’s really needed… good SIMPLE threat detection. Only 2 processes running from Avast. I LOVE IT! Thanks.
Glad that it helped and more importantly you found the search function (many don’t).
Also the forums should be your first port of call, as it is likely to save you time as it is unlikely that what you experience is the first occurrence.

I am having a similar problem with Avast blocking incoming mail, but adding an entry for the account in Avast has not worked!
I am using thunderbird (V 3.1.7) and receiving mail from a POP mail server on port 110 (no connection security, auth method is 'password transmitted insecurely)
I get the error message “An error occurred with the POP3 mail server. Mail server x responded:”
I have tried it without any entry in Avast (as it does say that non-SSL accounts don’t need to be listed)
I have tried it with an entry in Avast - with Encryption set to none. Neither of these options works
Any other ideas please??
(note that when I turn off the mail shield the emails are received fine)
