Avast makes Windows unresponsive

Three times now Avast has notified be that I am unprotected. If I bring up the Avast dialog and click ‘resolve’, I think it is, the dialog becomes unresponsive and a bit later windows becomes unresponsive. It appears the windows explorer has crashed (NOT IE). It then test some effort to get the machine to boot again, I have to come in safe mode first, shutdown and come up normally. Some times I have to do that more than once.

Perform a repair of avast and see if that solves it.
If not, perform a clean installation of avast.
