Avast new version update

Yesterday I downloaded the latest version of Avast 4.8, as prompted by the update notification, in XP Home SP3 / IE 8. It then asked me to reboot and so I did. Panic! All desktop folders and icons disappeared, leaving only the wallpaper and “My documents” “My computer” and “Recycle bin”. Also the programs and applications listed under the “All programs” tab are but just a few (and there were many!). I can’t access system tools, nor games, etc, all these folders have either disappeared or are empty. What I have done already:

  • system restore
  • CCleaner
  • run Avast (one Trojan caught)
  • run SuperAntiSpyware (11 Adware caught)

Nothing has worked!!!

Can you help me, plz?? ??? >:(

wow… never ever heard of that kind of thing…

Try this.

  1. Restart your system
  2. When the system first boots, type F8 to bring up the boot menu
  3. Select the Safe Mode with Command Prompt option
  4. Log-on as administrator if needed
  5. At your command prompt type c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
  6. Hit Enter
  7. This will open the system restore wizard

restore to a point before you installed avast and see if that helps.

Edit:
Sorry, I missed the part where you did a system restore. Still asleep.

Read the instructions, download and burn (maybe from another computer), finally use one of this rescue CD’s:

  1. Dr. Web
  2. Avira
  3. BitDefender
  4. Kaspersky
  5. F-Secure
