AVAST no longer function VPS error

Help my Avast doesn’t want to work any more. I have a 3500+ Athlon processors with Window xp x64, SP2 and the icon in the task bar shows the Avast icon with a circle with a slash through it and when a try to start it up I get either the 42040=vps file destroyed or if i try from the tak bar I get the AAVM subsystem detected a rpc error. I have tried repairing in add/remove programs and am told that I must reinstall. I have used the avast removal tool and tried to reinstall but nothing seems to work.

Please, what can I do. I am at wits end.

what is your Avast! version?

There were recent changes on avast virus database that requires the use of the last program version (4.7.1074).
Besides this, do you use any other antivirus in your system? Did you use in the past?

Note: I’m quite sure there wasn’t any forced update to 4.7.1074.

Hmmm… someone posted that the new vps date scheme ‘forced’ this update… but, of course, I’m wrong and you’re right.

I’m not sure what the version was that I had installed before this began, but I now have 4.7.1043 installed. It starts up now but I still get the same 42040 code. Avast is the only antivirus program that I have installed and up to now I have had no problems.

I should maybe amend the previous post. When I go into about AVAST it says build sep2007 4.7.1043. But I also just got this error message in the avast!Antivirus setup:Information about current update:
Last encountered error: The package is broken.

Total time: 24 s

  • Program: Already up to date
    (current version 4.7.1074)
  • Vps: Already up to date
    (current version 071104-0)

But yet I still get the VPS file is destroyed error.

Does anyone come with the machine, preinstalled (OEM)?

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
