Avast non-operational

Hello,
It looks like my Avast program has been attacked. When I booted my machine earlier today I noted that the Avast icon in the toolbar was stationary with a red X and I receive a message that the firewall is not operational along with other back ground processes. Avast won’t run at this time. Any suggestions?
thank you

Repair Avast:

  1. Control Panel → Add/Remove programs → Avast
  2. Click on ‘Repair’.
  3. Follow instructions.
  4. Reboot.

Hello,
Thank you for the suggestion. I had tried that but, you reboot and it automatically wants to reboot again and again. I did try a full uninstall and downloaded a new copy. It appears to load until it comes time to reboot; it just won’t finish the install.
Also, looked into doing a system restore but it will not complete that process either; says that endpoints are missing.
Seems as though something got through…
Thanks

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
  • Which version…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

Hello,
We’re running Free Avast, v11.1.2245 on a machine with XP Professional.
No other AV’s installed but the machine does have Malwarebytes and Glary Utilities. All three have been installed on the machine for many years without conflict.
Before Avast, AVG may have been installed on this machine.

First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of your prior installed AV(s)…!!

Then:

  1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

It looks like we have made some headway. The existing Avast files were removed and the new file downloaded and installed. I ran a full scan and nothing was picked up but, later I ran a boot scan and there were 23 files that could not be scanned. I don’t recall anything of this nature before; is that unusual?

Nothing to worry about I would say, unless your system is behaving strangely.
