Avast not detecting virus/malware

I’ve been running Avast for a while, and upgraded to Avast 5 when it came out, but within the past couple of weeks, I’ve been having virus or malware-like behavior on my computer. It began as my browser redirecting me when I tried to open links in search engines, and this happened with any browser and any search engine(tested on IE and Firefox, and used Google, Bing and Yahoo) but recently(began on 8/18/2010) my windows has begun to freeze without beginning a memory dump, so one by one, the programs will freeze up if I click on anything on them.

They will basically respond until I try to make them do any sort of processing(eg. clicking on start scan in Avast freezes Avast, trying to open Avast from the toolbar freezes explorer.exe, trying to open a new tab in firefox freezes firefox, etc.) I do not get this problem in Safe Mode, but when I boot into normal Windows mode, it always happens, without fail, and starts seemingly at a random time.

I’ve set up Avast to run on a custom scan, looking for everything and anything that could be harmful, and it comes up with nothing every time. I’ve also tried using SUPER anti-spyware, Malwarebyte’s Anti-Malware, AVG 9.0 Pro, and Hitman Pro 3.5. Nothing returned anything of interest, other than a couple tracking cookies in SUPER.

Also I’ve noticed that when I try to schedule a boot-time scan, in either normal windows or safe mode, it says that it’s scheduled, but when I restart, it doesn’t ever bring it up, it just goes back into windows, and when I check it says that there is no scan scheduled.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, by the way. Not sure how much that helps, but I really do need help on this.

EDIT: Hitman Pro 3.5 claims that there’s a “Possible variant of the TDL3(alias Alureon) rootkit detected” I’m not sure exactly what this means, but I thought it might help.

Thanks so much,
Robert

[*]If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
[*]If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of “TDSSKiller.[Version][Date][Time]_log.txt”. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Fantastic! Thank you so so much, it said I had an infection in disk.sys, and it removed and replaced the file after a reboot. I’m booted into normal windows mode right now, and I’m waiting to see if anything starts freezing, but so far it seems to be working!

Thank you so much,
Robert

No problem - if you want me to check out the rest of your system just ask ;D
