since some days, XP security center not recognise avast as antivir prog. I have a security alert when i start windows. Any idea about this ?

Zaz ???

Which avast version are you using?
Which is the virus database version and date?

Use the ‘About’ menu of the ‘a’ blue icon.

The version : 4.1 familial, Jun2004 4.1.501, VPS : 0445-2.
Xp is under SP2, with all availables updates installed.

Thank you !!

It should be recognized…
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

I’ll ask for Alwil support here…

I have launched a repair, without result. And after, an uninstall and reinstall from version from the site without result too. Maybe another prog recently installed cause pbs… (i have added hotsync manager for synchro of my palm, virtual Daemon manager to mount cd iso images. I’ll try to remove all these and reinstall…

Thanks

When you need to uninstall Avast, use the uninstall util from the Alwil website.

Or perhaps even better, upgrade to Avast 4.5

I had this same problem with 4.5 and XP with XP2, Security center complaine about avast either being out of date or the definitions.

I went to Add/remove programs selected “repair” and all id GOOD

AVast rulez! I just hope they don’t start charging for this anytime soon! ;D

The odd thing is, I’ve never had any problems with the security center recognizing avast. I understand there were some problems while SP2 was still in its earliest beta stages, but the Alwil team managed to get the MS people to correct that part of SP2 long before its final release.

Even my Everest (SysInfo on steroids  ) recognizes avast, although it’s unable to pin it down to version number.

What doesn’t recognize avast, rather surprisingly, is ZA 5.5 (home edition).

Even MS Office apart from ZA does not recognise AVAST. I think ALWIL should do something about it.
Hopefully macro viruses(whatever that means) in office programs are detected by our food AVAST> Any comments?

What do you mean MS Office does not recognize avast?

As about ZA, they don’t plan on detecting various 3rd party AV’s to make you think your system is vulnerable and get their own AV solution (which is, of course, being detected fine). It’s nothing but a marketing tool.

I have Security Center and a lot of other useless things disabled, with XPantispy. I know I have a working firewall and I can see that AVAST is working, so who needs Windows to tell me they are. It’s just another waste of memory, however little, for it to be functioning.

That’s pretty much what I’d guessed, thanks Vlk. I’ve shut down that part of their warning system since it’s pretty much useless.

I also don’t use their outgoing-mail thingie since all it checks for is outgoing mass-mailings, and my Eudora does that quite nicely by itself.

I had some problems with security center in the past. It told me after uninstall of panda platiniun that i still have it and it’s up to date. I installed avast and then SC said that i have more than one AV program running. I came trough this problem only after reinstalling all Windows. Now SC works fine with avast.

Dear Vlk,
Its fine with ZA.
What I meant by MS Office is
In excel XP tools>options>security>macro security dialog box says “no virus scanner installed”. All resident programs in my avast pro is running and also virus database is updated.

scaa
I just checked my settings and it says the same as you’rs however, that’s not what determines if MS recognizes avast!
please go to the control panel > security center and then look and see what it says in there under virus protection.

Mine says:

scaa, OK I see. Yes, avast doesn’t use the MS Office AV interface, it does the scanning by an another (and imho better)method. Hence it will not show in that window (albeit it’s working fine).

Hope this helps,
Vlk

THANKS VLK, that’s very reassuring
