I’ve searched through the forum but didn’t find the answer (please point me, if there already is one).
I have Avast set to scan incoming IMAP email. I have set my email client to not use SSL/TLS, and in Avast SSL accounts I see the IMAP server mapped to “TLS” (I’ve also tried “none”) port 143.
I do not see X-Antivirus or X-Antivirus-Status in the mail header but Avast’s mail log has any entry that says
1/26/2011 6:57:58 AM 000033B0: --IMAP Mail is clean
I’ve also confirmed that port 143 is in the “Redirect Settings”.
Any ideas? Is it actually scanning the mail and just not inserting the x-headers and the “clean” note?
Thanks.

Port 143, no SSL sounds right for the client.
The IMAP server for secure IMAP is usally mapped to port 993 using SSL, as it is in gmail, although your ISP could also be using TLS.
Turns out I have to set encryption to “none” in the SSL accounts. When I had set them to “TLS” it seemed to work but when I restarted the email client it wouldn’t be able to connect anymore. I’m guessing it kept the connection open and the next time it was created was when the encryption interfered.
That makes no difference for the note insertion though – I still don’t see anything inserted into mail received over IMAP.
What port are you actually using with your IMAP server? 993 is standard for encrypted mail. If you look at the bottom of the Mail Shield tab there is a listing of “last mail scanned” that should tell you whether Avast! is actually scanning your mail.
BTW, I do see some mails without messages when I look at my Spam folder. These consist of just html (http traffic), with nothing to be scanned by avast! Mail Shield, thus no safe or not evaluation.
Looking at the “last email scanned” status is interesting (thanks for the idea).
If I open my INBOX (mail stays on server), headers are downloaded, nothing is scanned.
If I open a message within the INBOX (stays on server), “last scanned email” says “e-Mail” and a blip appears in the traffic chart.
If I open a new message within the INBOX, then go back to the previously opened message in the INBOX (all staying on server), there’s no blip in the traffic chart (I’m assuming my email client caches it).
If I move a message to a local mailbox (removing it from the server), “last scanned email” shows the email name/subject and a blip appears in the traffic chart.
So, it appears that it is scanning the email but not inserting the x-headers or the “clean” note.
Don’t know why you aren’t getting the message then, when you open it in the inbox and it gets scanned-at least that is the way it works in TB using SSL. Check again under behavior to make sure that you still have checked inserting messages into clean mail. Otherwise something for the developers to take a look at with your client.
