First check your computer for malware with
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.50.1 http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
alaways update the program before you scan
click the remove selected button to quarantine any infections found
please post the scan log here
If that does not solve the problem, then i would try a reinstall of avast!

What is the Service Pack level of XP ???
What are the system specifications as CPU type and speed ???
To do a repair of avast. The below is for XP but other Windows OS will be similar :
Control panel > Add/remove programs > click once on avast to select it > click on Change/Remove > scroll down the left pane and click on repair > click OK> follow directions
