Avast not runing after system startup?

Well I am a bit worried. I update my Avast almost every day.
But after a system startup my avast notification icon in taskbar is gone :-\

And I have not choosen an option of hiding “avast” icon…
But I think avast is still running because i have active some of the avast processes,
showing in windows task manager.

Only after running a “ashDisp” icon in Program files I have my icon back.

And in Program Settings I have already checked the option for showing avast tray icon

So why I dont have a icon in tray?
also msconfig shows a normal startup of all drivers and services

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?
Have you installed any other security related programs recently ?

avast! icon missing - As a temporary measure you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers). Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut).

You also appear to have the aswUpdSv.exe missing unless it is out of the screenshot or obscured ?

aswUpdSv.exe is I presume process for automatic update? I have disabled this option, I do my updating manual. It hasnt been obscured nor is visible in task manager. Is that a problem?

I have Spybot and TuneUp utilities 2006…other security based software I have dont have startup management option.
Spybot has a “mark”(startup enabled) on Avast! service GUI component and TuneUp StartUP Manager hasnt got anything about avast. So I have added it as a startup entry

It shouldn’t be. This is an Windows Service.

Do you have ashdisp.exe running?
The Security Center alert of your system task bar is related to antivirus or firewall or Windows automatic updates?

If you have disabled aswUpdSv.exe and not some other issue then there is no problem, I only mentioned it because of the ashDisp.exe problem.

If you have spybot’s TeaTimer (Tools, Resident) running that could be stopping the startup entry for ashDisp.exe.

Creating a startup entry for it should be fine provided there isn’t something that removed the original entry doesn’t remove it too.

I’m having the same problem… The icon doesn’t appear when Windows starts. So I run “ashDisp” and the icon comes back. I use AdAware Free (no resident shield) and ewido anti-spyware, that has resident shield, but the icon already had disappeared before installing it. Sorry for intervening… I just don’t want to create a new topic that has the same subject  I attached a screenshot of the processes before and after running “ashDisp”.

  1. Check the option in the Appearance tab of settings.
    or
  2. Repair your avast installation through Control Panel.
    or
  3. Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder
    or
  4. Add the path to ashDisp.exe into a value named avast! in the Windows Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

The two other processes are started because you’ve opened your mail program and your browser…
ashdisp.exe IS the icon on system tray.

Hi Tech
Sorry, but how do I do this? ???

Copy the text below, open Notepad, save this code to avaststartup.reg in your desktop.
Check if the path is corrected (avast folder).
Look the extension should be .reg
Right click the file and choose to Add to registry.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"avast!"="C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\ALWIL SOFTWARE\\AVAST4\\ashDisp.exe"

Some doubts:

Do I have to put exactly this?

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"avast!"="C:\\ARQUIVOS DE PROGRAMAS\\ALWIL SOFTWARE\\AVAST4\\ashDisp.exe"

“ARQUIVOS DE PROGRAMAS” written in capital letters, even if the name of the folder isn’t written in capital letters, right?

No… it’s not necessary.
But, maybe, it will be better the short path:

C:\ARQUIV~1\ALWILS~1\avast4

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"avast!"="C:\\ARQUIV~1\\ALWILS~1\\avast4\\ashDisp.exe"

Thank you, Tech.
Now the icon is appearing when Windows starts ;D
Thanks for the help!

You’re welcome 8)

I’m having the same problem

After reading through this topic , I did the following:
1. Check the option in the Appearance tab of setting.
This was all marked by default
or
2. Repair your avast installation through Control Panel.
Could not be done, everytime I did this avast would start with new setup, so I did that
or
3. Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder
could not find “ashdisp.exe” in avast folder after restart,
so I reinstalled avast again,
then “ashdisp.exe” it returned,
but after restrt it was gone again.
Made a copy to the desktop,
and paste it into avast folder,
after restart it was gone

or
4. Add the path to ashDisp.exe into a value named avast! in the Windows Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Did this,
after restart it was gone

So uninstalled spybot,
went through all steps
but at restart, “ashdisp.exe”
would be missing from avast folder.

Any ideas

will unistall all addware and spyware programs and post back.

Your note 3. and 4. seem to indicate you have still have a program that is deleting it.

Rounding up the usual suspects for this behaviour. What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, PrevX, WinPatrol, Windows Defender, ProcessGuard, etc. ?

This topic goes through the same saga you seem to be experiencing http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=23877.0 and ultimately two other suspects come to light as deleting ashdisp.exe and associated registry entries. It takes some time to get to that so you might want to quickly browse through it to the last or second to last pages and see if there is anything familiar there.

 Hi David & Tech :

Based on the info in the thread I started, perhaps you
should add Spyware Doctor's "StartUpGuard" to the "list"
  of "suspected" programs !?

I think so, the list is getting bigger, but it is more to prompt people to look at their security based programs and see if it has this startup protection.
