Hi, this is my first post here. I’m a very happy user of Avast! for some time already. And as far as I can tell it’s still working perfectly well at the moment.
However, Windows Security Center thinks it’s not running, and I’m left with the little red shield in the system tray. According to Windows “avast! antivirus 4.6.763[VPS 0607-2] is not running”
I’ve performed an update and a repair already. Both times I was informed that everything was up to date.
Check system date time this usualy causes the error. Welcom to Avast
Thanks, I did that but system time is ok.
Hi and welcome ,
a search on “windows security centre” gets loads of hits as this has been a common fault with windows.
here`s one from the list http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=17822.msg151817#msg151817
good luck
the micro$oft version http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883792
I believe something is broken in the windows security center or related files you could try Start, Run, and type ‘sfc /scannow’ without the quotes.
This is system file checker and it will scan files for corruption, etc. and if it finds anything it will most likely ask for your windows CD. if you replace a file you would be advised to call in at windows update just in case.
From time to time I do things that require (or at least benefit from) pausing the Standard Shield, and that triggers the Security Center alert.
Since I’m happy that avast is working properly, and the alerts were a pita, I changed the Security Center settings to turn off those alerts.
Be forewarned that if you use Spybot S&D, turning off the alerts will show up as a possible danger in Spybot scans. You’ll want to tell Spybot to ignore that (via right-click menu after a scan). Make sure to select only that item (you’ll need to expand with the “+”) so you don’t also ignore any other Security problems.
No luck so far.
I’ve run sfc but that didn’t help. I’ve checked the links you suggested, but most other problems with WSC and Avast AV seem to be related to the fact that Windows does not recognize the software, or finds it’s outdated.
My Avast AV is recognized correctly, but Windows states that it is not running. To be more precise, I use a Dutch Windows version, and the exact translation would be: “avast! antivirus 4.6.763[YPS 0607-2] is switched off”.
Since I’m sure it’s not, and I’m convinced it’s up to date and working correctly, I’ll probably turn of the alert.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Yes that is up to date, however, is Your OS fully up to date, just a chance that may resolve it.
It is a bit of a pain when the windows security center doesn’t work as expected and short of doing a repair install of the OS (an even bigger pain) what you suggest may be your only option.
Windows XP repair / reinstallation information. , you would obviously have to reapply all service packs and security updates.
Welcome to the forums.
Problem solved.
I completely removed Avast, restarted the PC, and did a fresh install.
Still don’t understand what happened, but all is fine now.
Neither do I, the wonder of Windows ;D glad it is resolved though.
