avast not running...

hello all,
I have been using avast for the last 8 years or so and it has always worked great. tonight i noticed that the icons didn’t load after a boot. I launched it from the start menu but I can’t seem to turn on resident protection. Looking in the task manager none of the processes are running. I repaired using the add/remove from the control panel with no luck. Did a clean install after removing it and still nothing. There have been no changes to my computer in the last month so I’m at a loss here. I’m running XP SP2 and no other anti virus software.

any thoughts?
thanks,
Brian

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results and post the last 350-450 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

Morning,
i followed your instructions and got the same results. nothing in the system tray and no processes running. I launched the program from the start menu and resident protection is defaulting to disabled again.

thanks for your help,
brian

So, your computer seems to be infected and avoiding the avast installation.
Read the instructions, download and burn (maybe from another computer), finally use one of this rescue CD’s:

  1. Avira
  2. Kaspersky
  3. BitDefender
  4. F-Secure
  5. Dr. Web

So there are no task manager processes for avast beginning with ash or asw, see image ?

If not reboot your system and watch for any errors, and after boot check the windows event viewer for any warnings or errors relating to avast in either the Application or Antivirus sections, if so post a few of the errors.

Thanks for all your help, the scans from cd didn’t find anything. Since i keep my data (photos, music, Docs) on a removable i just reformatted and reinstalled. Kinda therapeutic to get rid of all the junk i accumulated anyway.

thanks again

You’re welcome.
