AVAST not running

I suspect it may be due to a rootkit of some kind. I have had an issue with one previously which I thought was removed, but might not have been. I am currently going through the log gathering process outlined on http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0. I will post the logs once I have completed the process. Thanks for your help in advance.

I’ll notify Essex or someone for you. Please be patient, as some of them may be at work right now…

What is the exact problem ?

I will. Thanks for the help. I am attaching the reports now with the aswMBR on the way. On a side note, running the Malwarebyte’s scan and a subsequent restart seems to have Avast functioning again. Though I still feel like there may be something more sinister lurking in the bowels of the system. Thanks again for taking a look for me…

The initial problem was Avast stopped functioning and couldn’t be restarted or repaired. But as stated above the Malwarebyte’s scan seems to have fixed that issue for now. I just have a lurking suspicion there may be a rootkit as well. But I will defer to your expertise.

There is a possible zero access there

  • IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
  2. Do not “re-run” Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
  3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

I am running ComboFix now, but did get a popup saying:

Unable to create folder:
C:\Windows\erdnt\Hiv-backup

I clicked OK to allow ComboFix to keep going. It is on stage 5 at the moment. Will post the log once it is done.

So ComboFix finished and said something about restarting and closed itself, but after 20 minutes of no icons I manually restarted. I do not see any ComboFix.txt but do see some folders that were created. So not sure where to go from here, please advise. Thanks.

Is there a file called combofix.txt at C:\combofix.txt if so could you attach that

I am not seeing any text file in C:\

OK could you run combofix one more time please

It seems that Avast is back to not responding. I had it permanently disabled but that doesn’t seem to stop it from running the AvastUI.exe. The service itself says it is stopped in the Computer Manager, but ComboFix is giving me the warning about it running while Avast is active. I have tried stopping the process with no luck. So I seem to be at an impasse.

And by ‘stop the process’ I mean the AvastUI.exe.

If you have disabled all shields then accept the combofix warning and run the programme

I am getting the same result. It closes itself and then all icons disappear. Also checked for the text file but there isn’t one. I did also get a popup that said, “Windows cannot find ‘NIRCMD.EXE’. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.” ComboFix itself also gave some syntax errors while running.

Could you run a fresh OTL scan using the same script as the initial run

Here is the second OTL run.

OK lets try this, on completion can you let me know if Avast is running and how the computer is behaving

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

Avast 2014 has been released a few minutes ago.

Maybe an uninstall and reinstall of the final version?
