Avast not scanning and can't stop scan

I know my subject doesn’t seem to make sense… but… I’m trying to scan my computer. I have started the scan, and as you can see from the screen shot, Avast says it’s scanning, but it hasn’t tested any files/folders and there has been no data tested. In addition, hitting the Stop button does not stop the scan. Hitting the Pause button does not pause the scan. I have to restart my computer in order to get the ineffective scanning process to stop. I am now up to 15 minutes of scanning without it scanning anything. Any ideas?

Interesting thing I found, the avast! Antivirus service was not running in the services. Once I started that service, I was able to stop the scan. Thinking this might have been the problem with Avast not scanning any files, I restarted the scan and nope… same result. Found in another thread that turning off the feature to scan the files in order makes the scan work, and this worked. It is still interesting that the avast! Antivirus service was not running after rebooting the computer. Does this mean that my computer is not protected even though the Avast icon is showing in the system tray? In case I forgot to mention in my original post, I’m using Avast Internet Security on a Windows 7 64 bit machine.
