avast not scanning yahoo/hotmail POP using Thunderbird

I’m a newbie trying to correctly setup Avast w/ Thunderbird. I’m running the following:

Avast 4.6-603
Thunderbird 1.0 w/
Web Mail extension 0.2.6 (http://www.eskvale.plus.com/about.html), Yahoo extension
0.2.8, Hotmail extension 0.3.6
ZoneAlarm Pro 5.5.062.011

I have setup Thunderbird to check localhost port 110 (per instructions from extension author) as my incoming POP server to d/l Yahoo and Hotmail email which works correctly, and I have set my outgoing SMPT server to the one designated by my ISP on port 25, which also works. I do not use SSL connections. When I look at Internet Mail at Last Scanned, it seems Avast has only scanned by outgoing test email, and the Scanned Count is 1. None of my incoming email from Yahoo and Hotmail seems to have been scanned. I have OE turned off on Avast.

I have searched for other threads but haven’t seemed to find a solution to my problem.
Currently I do not have another POP account to test from a server other than localhost.
Does Avast not recognize email downloaded from localhost?

Thanks for all your help.

Just tried it with the same setup here, avast scanned the mail fine.

Avast should scan these ports by default on Win 2000/Xp machines, however not on Win9x/ME machines, what OS are you running?

thanks for the reply. i’m using WinXP SP2 w/ all the updates.

Hmm, strange that avast isn’t scanning them, the only difference i can see is in the firewalls (im using Outpost 2.5), so does disabling Zonealarm let the mails be scanned?

Are you getting the mail icon in your taskbar near you system clock?

Is avast scanning your inbound pop mail? (Avast on access panel > Internet mail > Customise > pop)

Is avast scanning pop mail port 110? (Avast on access panel > Internet mail > Customise > redirect)

Are you sure your mail is actulary ariving in your inbox?

Sorry, clutching at straws at the moment

Click on the “a”-icon in Windows taskbar, click Details>>, double-click “Internet Mail”, select Redirect and uncheck ‘Ignore local communication’. That should solve it.

thanks for all the help everyone. you were right vojtech, unchecking “Ignore local communications” did the trick.

I am running a very similar setup.

Win2000 - SP4 updated
Thunderbird 1.0
Webmail extensions (for yahoo & hotmail)
and I use gmail’s pop access w/ thunderbird.

Now, I’ve been using Avast for about a year. Back when there was a Mail Protection Wizard, I could never get Avast to automatically change the settings to protect mail other than my main Thunderbird account (my ISP mail, incl. SMTP). I was able to get around this by manually entering the correct info in my account settings in TB.

I guess I’m just mentioning this because I’ve never been able to have the auto-protection work - wizard or not. I just did a fresh install of Thunderbird recently and the only two account I’d set up were my main (ISP) account and gmail POP. If I wanted to scan my gmail, I’d have to open account settings, change server to 127.0.0.1, and append my server name to my username.

I suspect that the fairly new Webmail extensions for TB will be taking off in a big way soon, and the convenient gmail POP service is pretty popular with Thunderbird, too.

Have I been doing something wrong all this time, or is Thunderbird a little buggy about auto-protect?

In Windows 2000 you don’t ‘have to’ do this… avast! will scan your email without changing the server address. It should be done automatically.

Anyway, TB was never very ‘easy’ with autoconfiguration into Windows 98\Me and with older versions of avast.
Right now with Windows 2k it should work immediatly ::slight_smile:
