V8 of avast is doing what an earlier version did. It is claiming to be unable to automatically update the database. I am showing I have 132021-1 live. It will also not update the actual programme, although I am happy enough to remain with 8. It is Avast Free AV. Manual updates fail as well, telling me it is up to date. I read somewhere using Firefox as my browser, which is my browser of choice, may cause this, but I can no longer find the information. How can I fix this please, I see many mentions of similar problems on the web. Thanks. I don’t believe 132021-1 IS the current version?

Replying to myself I have done some reading of older forum posts. Although the definitions screen in Avast Free shows an earliion defininitions version if I open the defs folder in Avast it shows later ones. Does this screen shot imply it has actually updated? Thanks.

There is certainly something wrong with your virus definition updates, whilst the streaming updates are working fine, the auto updates aren’t.

Are you getting any errors displayed to the screen on the virus definition auto update ?

When you try the manual update what error is displayed ?

I suspect it is saying that you should use the full update or words to that effect:

  • Manual update of VPS - avast! Virus Definitions Update - Manual Download VPS Update (virus definitions, vpsupd.exe, approx 103 MB). - Save the file to your hard disk, locate where you saved it and double click it and that should carry out the virus definitions update.

A browser isn’t required to complete the auto/manual updates, so the browser you have is irrelevant in this case. But is required to do the above download.
