Avast not working and will not register

I’m using the Avast! Free Antivirus program and it has stopped working and will not update. I’m running a win xp 32 bit system and using Avast 8.0.1483

Under the Maintenance Tab it says - not yet registered (0 days remaining).

I’ve used the “Register Now” button, it tells me that it is retrieving information and then stops. Under the Registration Information it tells me that I have registered on the 3/26/2013 and that the currant registration will expire on the 4/25/2013. But Avast will still not work and I still can’t get it to update?

So I’m unsure what to do now? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have attached a screen shot of the Maintenance Tab

Tia,

HI I would try a repair go into control panel and go to programs and features and double click on avast and scroll down to repair and do a repair after it has repaired it will say program is up to date and then exit and restart your computer.

If things do not work after you repair avast you should uninstall avast free and go to avast.com and re download avast free to your desktop and install it.

have a good evening.

Hi Diddy,
thanks for your help, I did a repair using add/remove in the control panel and got a Error processing package. Please use full update. Here is the log entry, hope this will help.

 1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
 2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
 3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
 4. Reboot.

Hi Asyn,
downloaded avast uninstall-utility, ran it in safe mode, rebooted reinstalled avast. Avast will not install and give me error saying there is a previous antivirus program installed. I have checked through my add/remove programs and there’s no antivirus programs listed, I even got rid of things that had a hint of antiviral behavior but still nothing. Here’s an attachment with the log, hopefully someone maybe able to spot something I’m missing.

 • OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
 • Other security related software installed…??
 • Which AV did you use before avast!..??

Hi Asyn,

I’m using Windows XP with SP 3
I have no other security related software installed
I used AVG 2012 and tried out Microsoft Security Essentials before moving to Avast

First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of your prior installed AVs.

Hi,

Have worked with a friend to make sure that there are absolutely no traces left of any other Virus Program.

Then used Wbem to reset the Security Manager settings so that Windows stated that there was no other Virus checker present.

Also used the Avast-Uninstall utility successfully.

Started doing a clean install of Avast 8

It complained in the log at end of install that a file signature for something it was downloading was wrong and would not complete the install (Red unhappy face appeared).

Happened three times in a row.

Re-downloaded the Avast 8 free install program.

Install went well, but…

Now right back at the beginning of the original problem (all over again)…

Avast! Free Antivirus program does not work and will not update. I’m running Avast 8.0.1483

Under the Maintenance Tab it says - not yet registered (0 days remaining).

But also says STATUS: Registered.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14138377/Images/Maintainence-Status-Registered-but-also%20not-registered.jpg

I’ve used the “Register Now” button, it tells me that it is retrieving information and then stops. Sometimes it goes through the process of starting the Registration screen then it disappears with no further error message.

Also strangely it nearly let me use the Recommend to others button, and asked for my email address, and then asked for the password then a new screen appeared, flickered and disappeared.

It fails to reset to factory settings…

It fails to update…

Fails to reset Software Updater database

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14138377/Images/failed_to_reset_Software_Updater_database.jpg

For many things often says “retrieving information please wait” but does nothing.

Any help much appreciated please.

Hi guys,

After going around in circles for the last 4 days uninstalling and re-installing things, I was going to uninstall Avast from my system and install another antivirus program. I had to reboot my system, probably the 3-4 reboot since my last post.

I had a pop up appear against the Avast Icon in the system tray, I clicked on it and it opened up Avast on the Maintenance tab …

Subscription Status: Trial Period Not Activated

with a button underneath - Activate Trial Period

Followed by the words - “The trial period is not activated. In order to start receiving updates, the trial period must be activated.”

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14138377/Images/Trial_Period_Not_Activated.jpg

So thinking that this was finally sorting out my problem (and knowing that I obviously do need updates) I had to hit the Activate trial period button.

I now find that I have a subscription for a trial version of the Pro Antivirus version, and that I have 20 days to buy it?

Hang on where has my free Version gone?!

And why did this Activation panel suddenly appear for me to click - when I did absolutely nothing at all to make it happen?

What is going on here please?

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14138377/Images/Subscription_Status_-_In_Trial_Mode.jpg

How do I get the free version going properly please?

Or is this all just a plan to make people use the paid version?

Michael

Wow!

It did a scan and found some old archive files it wanted to remove to the chest, so I let it do that.

It then said it needed to Update, so I let it.

Then it wanted a Reboot.

So I let it do that.

After restart it said that it was not working and to use the Fix It button.

But nothing would “Fix” …

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14138377/Images/UNSECURED_the_following_components_could_not_be_started.jpg

There is no protection for my computer now.

Plus it says that my license (supposedly a 20 trial period) has expired (all in one hour)!

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14138377/Images/Your_subscription_has_expired.jpg

Please, please, get an application developer on to these issues.

What should I do now please?

Repair avast!:

 1. Control Panel → Add/Remove programs → avast!
 2. Click on ‘Repair’.
 3. Follow instructions.
 4. Reboot.

Hi Asyn,
I did as you instructed and repaired avast! and then rebooted, but to no avail still did not fix it.

I hadn’t noticed before but the version that I’d installed was for Avast 7! version 7.0.1455. :o I have no idea how ended up installing version 7 as I have been downloading the install for the free version 8? :frowning: Anyway I uninstalled Avast 7! using the uninstall-utility

I downloaded a fresh version of the free Avast 8 and went through the install process and got an error took a screen capture of it below. I tried to repair Avast but Avast is not appearing in the add/remove programs list.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14138377/Images/Setup_Finished_-_There_was_an_error.jpg

the error log was too long to add to the post so here’s a link to the txt file,
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14138377/error_log.txt

Based on the dates in this thread the problem appears to have surfaced recently.

I’m running Windows XP SP3 (fully patched).
I installed Avast Free; it appeared to install, register and run correctly. After one or two reboots, however, the registration is “lost” (“not yet registered (0 days remaining” as quoted at the head of this thread) and the ONLY thing I’ve got to work successfully is an uninstall!

Either Avast is getting out of the free anti-virus business, or there is a bug in the version I downloaded yesterday (31-Mar-13)?!

I repeated the process… twice! I.e. no AV running; install and register Avast; it runs OK; reboot (sometimes it was only on the second reboot) and the System Tray icon has a white cross on red background and the main Avast home screen says “Unsecured” (as well as the “not yet registered yada yada”).

PS: I also ran a registry cleaner to ensure Avast wasn’t being tripped up by old software, but to no avail. Then I hopped on to this forum and discovered that a ton of us are having a similar problem.

I guess we need Avast support… probably quickly if they want to keep us as “customers”

Cheers, Geoff

First I would like to say a big thank you, to all those from the forum who took the time to read to this thread and offer assistance especially Asyn.

Well after waiting 5 days for help I guess that there’s no point in waiting any longer. I’m just going to have to find another Antivirus program.

Avast 7 free version worked so well and effortlessly on my system so I just don’t understand why Avast 8 free version refuses to install properly on the same machine now? With Avast 8’s weird registration problem and error messages telling you it would not install, then forcing you to upgrade to the paid version to get updates.

It would have been nice if someone from Avast actually looked at the error logs for me but expecting the forum community to tell other users just to use repair and uninstalling their software is useless customer support.

For now this has certainly put us off even considering buying Avast 8 for our machines.

Again thank you to all the other user who helped.

Micheal

I too have this issue.

After rebooting its now says my registration has expired… however i renewed it in Feb 2013.

Now wont update etc…

Any news on this ?

First, I’m new to forum today and don’t know how to do a new post. Can someone tell me how?
Second, I purchased a 2 year renewal, and the license WILL NOT LOAD. it says ’ access denied.’
I submitted a ticket this past Monday - no one responded. So I called today - let tech support (2nd level from Costa Rica) remote access, he said I had multiple registry issues and my computer could crash. He offered to fix it for $169. I said no. Thank goodness, after reading about this.
I submitted a ticket and a separate email for a refund, which he basically said they would not give due to it being my computer that has the problem, not their software. I will wait and see.
I also remembered that I had to accept ‘auto renewal’ whenI made my purchase. Dumb me.
How can I reverse that? I can’t find anything in ‘my account’ regarding billing.
I am getting very disillusioned with Avast in spite of recommending it to others. I feel like I am being scammed.
Can someone please help me with these issues? Thank you very much!

3rd time conquers? Again, I am running Windows XP, and Avast 8. I hope this msg takes this time. Sigh.

First, I'm new to forum today and don't know how to do a new post. Can someone tell me how?
when you enter a forum section (logged in) you will se a new topic button at upper right

I’m having a bad day and about to cry. The stupid verification thing below keeps wiping out my message!!
I cannot find the ‘new post’ button. I must be blind, or it’s not there.
Is it above the orange bar with ‘home, help, search, profile, my messages, lougout’?
I see the white search box in the upper right - is it above or below that?
The second orange bar just says ‘unread posts’.
Please help, I’m averting a meltdown at the moment. Sigh…

PS: Had the foresite to ‘copy’ my post before clicking ‘post’ - the next page said I already posted! When I checked, this did not post. I’m really having a bad day today.
