Avast not working properly on startup

Hi, I’ve been running avast on windows 7 for years, but have started having a problem recently where when I start my computer, I get a warning from avast, and a warning in the action center, that avast is turned off, regardless of whether or not it was on when i shut down my computer. When I try to reactivate it, I get a prompt saying “UI failed to load. This is really embarrassing. AV service is not responding.”
If it’s not outright off, then, I get a warning from avast that shields are disabled.
I have tried using the repair option and reinstalling avast. Neither helped. I’ve run avast and malwarebytes scans and they haven’t picked up anything, so I’m out of ideas. If someone could shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Perform a clean installation of the latest avast version using the off-line installer.
