Avast not working!

I loaded Avast and paid for the 3 PC Internet Security suite on my new computer. All has been running fine for a week, and today when I got home, it won’t activate. It says “Unsecured”, the virus database will not update, and it says it has been stopped or is in an inconsistent state, and please restart the program to resume protecting the system. Up top, where the word Unsecured (in big red letters) is, there is a button that says “fix now”. When I click this, Windows acts like it’s running a program for the first time, and nothing happens. Below there is a “start now” button beside where it says I should restart the program. I click this, and I get the same thing, with no results, no change. Protection status is “unknown”. When I try to update the database it fails and says the avast!service is not running. What’s going on?? Does anyone have any idea? I don’t understand what could possibly have happened and I don’t know what to do about this. I’m frustrated (I spent plenty of money on this because I have always liked Avast! and have never had problems of any kind before) and frankly scared. Please advise.

**Edited to add:
I suppose it might be helpful to note that
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Avast! version: 5.0.462 (Internet Security)

Welcome to the forums dondi1!
There’s a new Avast version now 5.0.499, donwload it here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=58183.0 and see if it cures your problem. If not post back again

If I download that, what about my license and all that–do I just download that and the license works fine for that automatically?

Yes, it should work automatically…

Thank you for your help…I downloaded that link and restarted my computer–and Avast! is still not working.–no change at all. :-\ Any other ideas? Should I maybe uninstall it and reinstall?

uninstall completely with this http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility then reboot and reinstall.

Well, the utility would not load, so I went into the control panel and uninstalled the program from there–that seemed to work. Then I installed it again from the website, input the license, and …all seems well for now! Phew! Hopefully I won’t see a repeat of that…
Thank you for your help!

Good to hear you got it fixed and running…
Happy weekend…!
