Avast! Not Working

My current status says in Avast! Free Antivirus program states it’s “unsecured. My system is not protected. Please use the Fix Now button to start protecting your system.”
The next line reads: “Urgent: avast! service stopped”
The last line reads: “The avast! antivirus program has been stopped, or is in an inconsistent state. Please re-start the program to resume protecting your system.”

Clicking the “FIX NOW” button doesn’t work. Clicking “Start program” doesn’t work. When I right click the icon in the task bar and click "Enable all shields (7 disabled), nothing happens.

I do have Avast on Sandisk U3 (virus definitions not updated). It allowed me to scan my drive but found no infected files.

I was on Myspace when an unwanted ad popped up and when I looked at the string of characters in the browser’s address bar, I immediately shut down my computer. The ad was one of those phony ones that claim there’s something wrong with your computer.

Since then, after I rebooted, I checked my Avast! and it is frozen in a nonworking, unstable state.

Does anyone have any answers or solutions? Will it be necessary for me to uninstall/reinstall the program (something I really don’t want to do)? Could I have corrupted the program when I immediately shut down the computer?

I just checked my Google history. The web page that popped up was: my-scanner60.com/contents1/..../...html. I performed a search and the only security web site that seemed to be familiar with it was malwareurl.com.

Bottom line, I want to get Avast! back to a working state. Help please.

Download and run MalwareBytes AntiMalware, update MBAM, scan, and then remove the malware it finds, then post the log.

  1. Yes, could be.
  2. Use the latest build of avast (5.0.545)
If you can’t update in the GUI, you have to download it from the homepage.
If you current installation is corrupted, uninstall it first.
If you can’t uninstall it the normal way, use this: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled Avast! plus updated it. So far everything seems to be fine. Thanks to both of you for you quick response and assistance.

You’re welcome, good your problem is solved…!!

Please start a new one.

I had the same big red X ------
I simply went to Control Panel and uninstalled AVAST and then went to Avast.com and reinstalled the application and it is working like a charm again.
