I have not had a problem with Avast since I installed it four or so months ago, but this morning when I turned on my computer, it said that it was not secured and that the Avast was not working or was in an inconsistent state. It stated to restart the program. When I restart the program, it says “not responding” and will not restart. I have tried to reboot the computer and that has not done anything. I have another computer in the house and that is operating fine. Has anyone else had this problem??
Did you use System Restore?
Which is your Windows?
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?
I just tried to repair it and it gave me an error message that says error processing packages. We are running Vista…
I suggest an installation from scratch:
- Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
- Download the latest avast! version and save it.
- Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
- Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
- Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
- Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
- Check and post the results.
I, too have had this issue on on not one but 2 laptops. On the HP, it was the wireless driver that was preventing the computer and AVAST from running. Tonight a friend brought over his compaq with the same issue. Updated the driver andwe got online. Went to install AVAST, could not find an internet connection. So tried another antivirus, only to have same results no connection found. As long as we had no antivirus, worked fine. However, he left with no antivirus in place. Both laptops, on HP and the other a COMPAQ. Looking for a solution as it also prevented all other programs from connecting, such as Java to up date. Any help gladly appreciated
@ itsthemommy,
Is your wireless router(?) working properly? Can you run a test on it?
Take a look at your FW log. Is it preventing you from gaining access to these sites?
Do you have an on-demand scanner for checking for malware? If not, you need one now since you do not have AV protection. The next time you can get online, please download the free version of MBAM http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and update do an update, then scan your machine. It is something to have as a backup.
The problem seems to be connecting to the Internet. I’m sure others will have more to contribute, but you may also want to contact your vendor for the wireless router for troubleshooting.
Here’s the thing…MSN messenger signs in and chat can happen. WLAN shows active and secure (stable) connections, my laptop is connected and the other one cannot …same network. So it is online but something is preventing the browser from connecting successfully…really scratching my head on this one. Any ideas or suggestions is greatly appreciated.
Have you been able to chat with anyone ???
Yes…spent the afternoon with essexboy and was able to resolve issues. Malware was present and some pesky remnants of Norton. Now able to browse and have working anti virus …thanks
Downloaded latest version, did a complete re-install and it worked…Avast is running well so far.
Thanks for the input.
