I’m using Avast 4.7.1098 on Vista Home Premium on a Sony VAIO. My internet speed is about 10x slower than it used to be with Norton 360 - absolutely terrible. As soon as I turn Avast off it is fine.
I use Windows Firewall but it makes no difference to speed if I turn it off.
I installed Avast as Administrator, using the r-click Run as admin option.
I downloaded a clean-up tool from Norton to ensure that 360 is completely uninstalled.
All the Avast Providers are set to Normal sensitivity.
I’ve read lots of related postings in this forum but cannot find a solution that works - any help much appreciated.
Did you run the Norton clean-up tool before or after installing avast?
Hello!
I have got the same Problem on my Toshiba Satelite with Vista Home Premium. Toshiba installed the norton internet secutity. At the first run I deinstalled it and after reboot I’ve installed Avast. I can’t say that the Internet speed was befor installing better, but when I turned Avast off it is mutch better.
Is there any bugfix for these problem?
Yes, I ran the Norton uninstall tool, but only after I had already uninstalled it via Add/Remove Programs
Do you use any firewall?
BUT … did you do this before or after installing avast? ???
I am asking this because it is possible that that the avast installation may have been incomplete or corrupted by the remains of Norton if Norton was not completely removed before the installation of avast. Norton must be completely removed with it’s removal tool before installing any other antivirus program.
(Someone correct me if I am wrong)
I am also having this problem as of the last avast program update, if i turn the virus scanner my DL speeds drop to 2-3 KB/s, which is terrible…
NOTE: i have never had any norton product installed on this computer, avast was installed on a fresh vista x64 system. it was working fine until a few days ago when i clicked on the update.
I’m running Windows Vista firewall but has no impact on speed if I turn it off.
I ran the Norton removal tool before I installed Avast. However, I have been told that sometimes there may be residue Norton probs if you uninstall N 360 via Add/Remove Progs and then use the Removal tool. So I’m going to try going back to factory state and then using the N Removal tool … what a pain. Unless anyone’s got any other ideas.
I appear to have fixed the problem by doing the following - what a pain:
- use Recovery to set laptop back to original state
- Use the Norton Recovery Tool to uninstall 360 - DON’T uninstall via Add/Remove Progs.
In fact after the first run of the tool Windows Security was still picking up N 360 so ran the Removal Tool again - Install Avast … and all the other software I’d lost by going back to initial state
You can thank Norton/Symantec for those problems.
Glad you got it sorted out!
I cannot open internet websites with Avast. I have to uninstall it to open websites. I tried installing it again, but the problem remains. I am using XP.
Hi, this does not seem to be in any connection with the original topic unless you are/were using Norton as well. In this case I recommend to do the same- uninstall avast, remove norton with the remover tool and reinstall avast.
As Lukor says this is unrelated to the original topic (hijacking the topic), plus you have also posted in another topic about this same issue, multiple posting on the same issue just duplicates effort by those helping. That said I have replied in the other topic you posted on also, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=20401.msg298649#msg298649.
