avast on win me

you know all your on access scaning and your webshield
well you need to turn it on in msconfig
but see i dont like it on all the time
like zone alarm is there like a short cut i can go to just to turn it on?

understan?
i dont want it starting on start up but i may want to on some times when i open a file that may have virus or some

I believe I understand.
But to make sure. You wish to turn off the active protection so that when you boot up it’s off and you wish to be able to activate it when you want at a click of a button (figure of speech).
Well don’t take this wrong but what you wish to do undermines the efficiency of AVAST. Further more, you increase the risk of getting a virus.
I recommend against it.
Cheers.

yea but see i dont like stuff turned on
since it makes probloms with other things and makes games go slower

so theres no way i can just put it on at any time i feel like it???

starcraftmaster,
If you are willing to bite the loss of protection bullet, you can left click the spinning Avast icon, and terminate each shield.
When asked if you wish this to extend through the next reboot, click yes.
Windows will start without the protection enabled, and you can then start each Shields as you see fit.
Not a good idea, but : “A mans gotta do,what a mans gotta do.”

Oh yeah,if you want this to continue, when you re-enable shields, you will be asked if you want this to persist after reboot. choose no.

Really wish you would leave the standard shield enabled at least.

well see am new to this anti virus and anti spyware
so whats the standard shield and the websield do?
are they a firewall or some thing?

and in ms config theres the options
avast! web scanner
and
avast!

i see that avast! turns all the stuff on but whats the avast! webscanner do and do i put it on?

well see am new to this anti virus and anti spyware
Welcome on board then. Hope avast will meet your security needs.
so whats the standard shield and the websield do?
Unless I'm mistaken, the standard shield scans the programs that run on your computer. The web shield scans your web browsing. (ie. if a page tries to download a known virus, Avast blocks the connection and prompts you for action... such as terminate connection or allow)
are they a firewall or some thing?
No. A firewall works in a different way. It generally blocks unsolicited programs from downloading on your PC and if you are using something like Commodo Firewall, it blocks unknown programs from connecting to the net. Avast doesn't prevent them it simply looks to see if it's a virus it knows and then it lets it go if it doesn't recognize it. Generally the forum members recommend installing a separate Firewall. See: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=30808.0 and http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=30036.0

Generally all but one of the providers/scanners work. So standard shield starts, web shield starts etc. except for the Outlook/exchange Shield. This only starts when you run Outlook.

Hope this helps.

ok thanks
but is there a boot scanner in avast ?
you know when you may have a virus in the boot thing so the os wont boot so you put the AV on a floppy disk and run it that way?

and see

ok so do i put the avast! webscanner on or just leave it off

thanks for the help
am going to be keeping avast since it seems to be very fast and does not slow the system down  unlike ZA with anti virus Lol it sucks! lol

Really I would leave it on. You say things are running quickly enough.
That is one of the great Avast feature IMO,a webshield that is really useable,
and does not slow browsing to any noticeable degree.
Just leave it set on default.
(setting it on high may cause some slow down of opening pages, and is really not
needed.)

It’s present on the 2k\XP\Vista systems.
There isn’t a free CD and avast can’t be run by floppies.
