I’ve an old laptop running Windows ME which I hadn’t used for a while.
I’ve put Avast on and it now runs very very slowly. Anything I get it to do. Very slow.
Is there an older or stripped down version of Avast that would be better for it?

Which is your Standard Shield security level?
Is there any other security program (antivirus, antispyware, etc.) installed?
How much memory do you have? cpu?
memory is cheap
can you max out your laptop?
Avast runs fine on my W98SE systems 256kb, 512, 1mb
I also downloaded the latest Spybot at the same time.
Nothing else.
I can have a look but I don’t want to spend money buying more memory and I don’t have the ability to install it either.
I’m looking for free solutions on my budget. (Partly why I’m using lovely Avast in the first place!)
I have some wonderful old laptops
A Zenith 286 turbosport with the expansion chassis- excellent screen runs Dos and Qemm and wordstar
A Toshiba DX2 with 24 Mb ram that’s max Dos and Win 3.11 1992 vintage Iron
They just do not ever get hooked to the internet directly
Laplink when necessary
Did you have some other av program on this laptop before avast?
If so, how did you remove it?
I had just reinstalled everything, wiping the hard drive as part of the process. It ran at a normal speed until I put Avast on.
OK … was just checking on that. Perhaps another route of exploring might help.
Please download HijackThis from the link below. Do not download HJT to the desktop but instead download it into it’s own folder on the hard drive.
Run the program but do not make any fixes and then post the log results using the “copy & paste” method. It will probably take more than one post to be able to get the complete log posted.
OR, you can post it as an attachment to your post by clicking on “Additional Options…” below left of the posting box. Someone will review your log and then offer help.

Sorry, but I do not find much wrong in your HJT log.
These 2 are related to Alexa which I do not much like …

… BUT, they are also related to MSN search. How MS ever got “in bed” with Alexa is beyond my understanding.

Since you are on an older computer with ME and most likely a low amount of ram, it is possible that Alexa’s “snooping around” might be contributing to the slow down. This is just my opinion, though.
