Avast Online Security add-on causes slower page loads

I tried enabling the Avast add-on “Avast Online Security” to test its impact on page loading.

Unfortunately web pages loaded much slower, so I disabled it.

Avast Free Antivirus ver. 10.3.2223
Laptop running Windows 8.1
Firefox browser

Well, FireFox is one of the slowest browsers around.
