I guess they are meeting some resistance to this draconian measure. If people are prepared to take responsibility to change about:config so they can use old no longer developed add-ons, then on their own be it.
An extract from your link by Gingerbread Man, seems to hold some hope.
All reviewed extensions hosted on AMO are signed now. Some third-party extensions may not be signed yet, but should be by the time signing is enforced.
[i]That means you only have cause for concern if you're using abandoned extensions not hosted on AMO, or versions you've modified. In that case, you can submit them to be signed, without having them listed on the site.[/i]
How anyone is to go about this (submission process) for abandoned extensions is what I would like to know.
