Your “Avast Online Security” icon next to my home button… How do I remove it? I do not want that button.

Which browser?
You should be able to disable/remove the AOS icon by right clicking and removing it.
If not, you would need to do it via the browser settings for extentions/add ons.

Right clicking only gives me options to turn on/off toolbars.
Browser settings for add-ons only allows me to enable or disable the add-on.
If you disable it, it should hide it.
If you want to permanently remove it from all your browsers:
Control Panel > Uninstall a Program > avast! > Change > [untick] Browser Protection
I think you want to disable the icon but not the add-on itself. If you want indeed want this, change to FF (or its custom build). Recent version does take out some customization but it is still the best customizable web browser. My suggestion is somewhat off-topic since you are talking about IE, but I sure it will work
