Avast opens during every file download - HELP!

I’m a new user to Avast, and I generally like the program but EVERY time I download a file, the Avast splash screen opens and starts a memory test. I need this to stop. I don’t want to have to stop and close that screen every time I need a file. All I want is a good antivirus to do one daily scan of my computer automatically in the wee hours of the morning and update itself. How do I stop Avast from opening during each file download without upgrading to the pro version? I use Firefox 3.0, Windows XP SP2, and Avast 4.8.

i don’t think that thats an avast! problem - probably you set it in the program settings of your downloadmanager

how do you download?
filesharing?
download via a downloadmanager?
torrent?

edit: removed the first line of my text - was nonsense

Use ashQuick.exe into your download manager and not ashavast.exe.
The problem is not the free x paid version here…

Thanks for the heads up on the download manager. The problem was actually found in my ‘download statusbar’ firefox add-on! If you open your add-ons and click on it’s options, you can uncheck ‘manually scan completed downloads’ and the problem goes away.

As for pointing it to ashquick instead, does that run avast silently/transparently in the background after the file downloads? I wouldn’t mind my files being scanned after they’re downloaded, but I can’t have it in my face all the time.

Many many thanks.

Into avast settings you can configure if you want a report or not (silent) scanning with ashQuick (called Windows Explorer Extension into avast Common settings).

I’m pretty new to this program, so what you just said didn’t make a lot of practical sense to me. How do I do that?

Also, I read that you can somehow schedule a daily scan through the task scheduler in the accessories folder off of the start menu. I did so by pointing it towards ashQuick, but it came up with an error because I didn’t enter a password for my user account, but I don’t use a password. Any thoughts?

Thanks again.

Right click the ‘a’ blue icon.
Program settings.
Common tab.
Check or uncheck the ‘Show results of Windows Explorer’.

This is a Windows limitation, i.e., you can’t schedule tasks in a non-passworded account.
The avast Home limitation is not offering a schedule scheme.

If you browse around this forum you can find other ways to schedule scans
however with Avast Download scanning, e-mail and web scanning, and on access scanning daily scans are not really necessary
There are also hints for setting your levels- standard or high
perhaps someone else will make some suggestions
although i would think some would depend on the hazard of surfing you do or if others use your machine
You have set up a user account for yourself and other users and guest have you not?
do not just run in an administrator account- it can be hazardous to your data
