Avast or AVG?

I use Avast right now and I love that it has more shields and configurable options and auto-updates, but I’m always wondering, does it have better detection than AVG overall? If I do not install, or permanently disable, AVG’s realtime protection can I use it with Avast, and would this provide significant detection boosts?

Or short answer, yes avast! has better detection.

a better second option would be Bit Defender 8 which is free , has great detection and no active sheild .If you feel you need the reassurance.

If you absolutly must (there are better detection on-demand only scanners as mentioned), one way of using AVG as a Backup Scanner (curtsey of Tech).

  1. Install avast. Boot. Setup all providers as you want/need. Update, etc.
  2. Boot
  3. Install AVG using a customized install and NOT INSTALLING any resident (not even for the email, or Outlook, etc.).
  4. Boot
  5. You can set the AVG services to manual to reduce resources use. You can set AVG Control to not alert about the absence of residents, etc.

Some people use both… I’ve also tryed and they can stay in real time togheter but You can avoid to install the mail control of AVG…

Anyway, Avast! is more than enalf for Home Customers

That may be the case but some on these forums have also suffered from conflicts. But the major reason for having a secondary AV would be that its detection is theoretically different (heuristics, etc.) or better and that simply isn’t the case with AVG.

I’ve tried to… so, sooner or later, Security Center detected the AVG legacy drivers and mess everything…
Well, I think since AVG 7 is not possible to have it as a secondary, non-resident, scanner. My poor own experience
