avast or Windows problem? Please help

I updated my avast and also updates my windows 7 recently and have encountered some problems afterwards and am unable to tell which is the culprit.

Some Symptoms:

  1. When launching a browser- the refresh button blinks on and off and sometimes i am unable to load a page. My IE Browser does not work at all.
  2. My music files play sporadically. I encounter an error message when trying to play music sometimes
  3. The sound goes off and on and works sometimes but not others

Thinking it was the windows 7 updates, i ran a system recovery but am still having the same issues

Has anyone one else who updated their avast or Windows 7 experienced related issues?

Did your problems start after the Windows Update or the Avast Update?

Was your Avast upgrade from 7.0.1426 to 7.0.1451?

The problems you describe sound more like something from Windows Update, or you could have something malicious.

What was the error message your received when trying to play music?

Is Avast working properly? Have you done any scans to see if you have any malware? If not and Avast is working properly, please run a Quick Scan; if anything comes up put it in the Virus chest and report back what is in there with the exact name and location of the files.

Do you have Malwarebytes Anti-malware (MBAM) on your machine? If not, download it here http://www.malwarebytes.org/, click on products and you can get the Free version. You must UPDATE it first prior to scanning. Do a Quick scan. Anything that comes up, put into quarantine and attach your report to your next post.

I think the problem started after the windows update. I had updated the avast prog. ver. and soon after went to sleep. When i awoke, i updated windows 7 so it’s kinda hard to tell. Yes the update was from the previous ver. to 7.0.1451

I thought it was something malicious because my PC is acting a little weird : delayed responses, icons and background disappearing/reappearing when opening Browser etc… I ran Full system Scan on avast and MBAM Pro and they found nothing. I did not do this is safe mode though. Should i try that/does it make a difference?

One thing that really concerns me is that my IE Browser does not work at all. I never use IE and am puzzled to why it doesnt work. I noticed before i was getting a yellow pop up at the bottom asking if i wanted to download or load a “Engagement.xml - edpn.ebay.com” page (don’t remember exact msg). I found this really weird as i have never visited ebay.com. But now when i attempt to open IE it recommends to open in compatibility mode and it freezes then crashes. I was connived that i was infected but given that MBAM and avast didnt find anything i would assume that’s not the case.

I dont remember the error message when trying to play music first. Now it is working fine, at first it was saying that it couldnt play the music file. It was a blank white icon as if the music file was non-compatible. I’m also experiencing lag and delay with my pc. I am a very careful user and cant imagine that i would be infected.

I am having an issue with Safezone. I get a message “Your profile could not be opened correctly. Some features may be unavailable. Please check that the profile exists and you have permissions to read/write its permissions”. This did not occur immediately after the avast update but after a few uses which is unusual. Safezone still works but sometimes it lags when i revert to it and printing does not work anymore :frowning: Other than that, i think avast is working fine. Except my browser when i open it, usually i can press alt d to access the address bar and retype an address but this is not able to be done (i have to click in the browser to select it even though i opened it) and the refresh button blinks which i dont get.

I think this is a windows issue but dont know where to go to fix this. Any suggestions?

Avast issue. I have the same kind of troubles (no sound starts, web blocked with wrong message “connection closed by server”) but only avast updated today. See also other posts.

=> The only solution I have to use my PC is to disable the Web agent of avast.
=> if it is not solved tomorrow, I’ll think about changing avast for another antivirus softW.

OK, maybe this is the same problem…
I just updated my Avast to 7.0.1451…
Now, any attempt to go on-line with IE, I keep getting this error:
“Internet Explorer has stopped working”
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly…"
(This happened about 60 seconds after loading my MSN home page. I did nothing and just waited for it to crash…
I then have the option to reload the page, which works, then after a short time it crashes again…
(Fortunaly, I have a second PC to send this message…)
This only started after the Avast program update…

I know there is going to be a fix on glitches of v.1451 sometime this week, but I don’t know the details.

In the meantime, you can try several things:

  1. Try an Avast Repair. Reboot.
  2. Uninstall / clean install. Make sure you untick install Chrome if you do not want it during installation.
  3. Uninstall all versions and products of Avast on your machine with a reboot in between each uninstall / clean install to v. 7.0.1426 until the glitches are worked out of v.1451.
