Just installed Avast 4.5 and I’m confused! Should I have ‘Mail Protection Wizard’ in Start - Programs - Avast Antivirus menu ‘cos it’s not there!
Also incoming emails are tagged TWICE with ‘Inbound Message Clean’
I’m not convinced that the automatic mail set up has taken account of K9.
According to Outlook Express my server settings on first bootup after installing v4.5 were:
Incoming: 127.0.0.1:9999
Outgoing: 127.0.0.1:9999#smtp.tiscali.co.uk
these didn’t work - I couldn’t connect to the mail server.
I have edited these to read
In: 127.0.0.1
Out: smtp.tiscali.co.uk
and this DOES appear to work tho’ I get the double tagging and I’m not sure K9 is in the loop.
Am I doing something wrong?
S.Z.C. fyi: I have 4.5 and the mail protection wizzard is still in the menu and working. And (as far as we know now) you still need to use the 127.0.0.1 trick for pop mail if you use Opera’s mail client.
OK, but why don’t I see Mail Protection Wizard any more ? And in my Outlook Express (I don’t use any other mail client) everything is set without 127.0.0.1 tweaking… all incoming and outgoing messages are checked properly and signed by avast!
Might be onto something here but need to investigate further.
If I open ‘On access Protection Control’ I see that under the ‘Internet Mail’ provider settings Avast is checking both POP3 and IMAP mail and tagging them as clean (or not).
Could this be why all my messages are double-tagged?
Do I need both POP3 and IMAP checking - what’s IMAP exactly?
Thanks.
IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is a standard protocol for accessing e-mail from your local server. IMAP (the latest version is IMAP Version 4) is a client/server protocol in which e-mail is received and held for you by your Internet server. You (or your e-mail client) can view just the heading and the sender of the letter and then decide whether to download the mail. You can also create and manipulate multiple folders or mailboxes on the server, delete messages, or search for certain parts or an entire note. IMAP requires continual access to the server during the time that you are working with your mail.
A less sophisticated protocol is Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3). With POP3, your mail is saved for you in a single mailbox on the server. When you read your mail, all of it is immediately downloaded to your computer and, except when previously arranged, no longer maintained on the server.
IMAP can be thought of as a remote file server. POP3 can be thought of as a “store-and-forward” service.
POP3 and IMAP deal with the receiving of e-mail from your local server and are not to be confused with Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), a protocol used for exchanging e-mail between points on the Internet. Typically, SMTP is used for sending only and POP3 or IMAP are used to read e-mail.
jhiker, I had the same problem when updating to 4.5.
Although, I use Spamihilator and not K9.
You should ‘turn back’ the configurations into the default ones, probably described on the K9 help file.
For Spamihilator:
Incoming mail pop3 server: localhost (or 127.0.0.1)
Account name: yourPOP3Server&yourUsername&120
